The suspect was identified as Sajjad Heydari (Ahvaz city, Khuzestan province, Iran), the victim was Mona Heydari (17 years old).
According to information from Iran’s National Committee for the Protection of Women (NCRI), the victim was forced to marry her cousin Sajjad Heydari when she was 12 years old and they have a 3-year-old boy together.
According to NCRI, Mona has suffered many times of abuse from her husband, but whenever she mentioned divorce, her family always pressured her and forced her to maintain the marriage for the sake of the common child.
Mona desperately ran away to Turkey, but then life in a foreign place was so difficult that she returned.
When she returned, her husband and his brother dragged the poor girl from a car into the house, then were tied up by the two villains and brutally executed. Sajjad’s brother was in charge of disposing of her body, while her husband went down the street to boast as a trophy.
Talking to the victim’s family, her father said it was “normal” to experience domestic violence in the couple’s relationship. He also said Sajjad Heydari was a “good husband”, working hard to give his daughter “the best life”.
When asked about Mona’s child marriage, he simply said that they had received confirmation that she was of legal age and did not have any physical problems in the relationship.

Sajjad Heydari has been arrested, but no charges have been filed against him yet. This means that the perpetrator may go unpunished or may only serve up to 10 years in prison.
Mona’s death has sparked debate in Iranian public opinion over the government’s refusal to pass laws protecting women and girls.
