A US military plane carrying four people has crashed in northern Norway while participating in a North Atlantic Treaty Organization exercise.

According to Norway’s Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC), the US Marines’ V-22 Osprey aircraft was reported missing at 17:26 GMT on March 18 (0:26 on March 19 hrs. Vietnam) while participating in NATO’s “Cold Response” exercise.

Had it not been for the crash, the plane would have landed at 5:00 p.m. GMT that same day.

According to Reuters, the weather in the area at the time of the accident was very bad and getting worse.

“The plane crashed to the ground,” a JRCC spokesman said. He said that authorities do not know the status of those on board.

A rescue helicopter and an Orion plane of the Norwegian army were sent to search from the air around the area.

“We found the plane after receiving a distress signal. Due to bad weather, we were unable to land. Police and rescue forces are on their way by road,” the spokesman added.

The US military has not released a statement on the incident.
