The new Mazda6 may not use rear-wheel drive

Mazda last year announced a strategy to launch a series of new SUVs in the CX series from CX-60 to CX-90 using an advanced chassis with rear-wheel drive bias and good support for 6-cylinder engines. Rumors at that time confirmed that the new Mazda6 would also use the above structure because of its size and strategic position, but so far we can be sure this information is not true.

According to Mazda Europe technical and development director Joachim Kunz, their new I-6 engine will not appear in the new Mazda6, simply because the car does not use the aforementioned new chassis. This chassis, according to the Mazda leader, purely serves the CX large SUV lineup, which they first launched with the name CX-60.

The new Mazda CX-60 and Mazda6 will not use the same chassis as previously rumored.

The recently launched Mazda CX-60 uses a chassis called SkyActiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture with a SkyActiv-G 2.5L engine with 192 hp and 261 Nm of torque supported by an electric motor of 136 hp and 250 Nm. torque and 8-speed automatic transmission. The total capacity of the car is announced at 327 horsepower, 500 Nm of torque, making this the most powerful popular car in Mazda’s history.

Some other published performance parameters of the Mazda CX-60 include a temporary 63 km range without fuel thanks to a 17.8 kWh electric battery, an average fuel consumption of 1.5L/100 km, the ability to acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 200 km/h.

With the above information from Mazda, 99% of their sports car projects such as the RX-Vision will also be shelved to make room for the lineup that brings the best sales and profits: SUVs.
