Foreign visitors eager to return to the Central region

Arriving in Da Nang, Mrs. Wood’s family was surprised to be greeted at the airport.

Four members of Mrs. Wood (an Australian citizen) flew from Singapore to Da Nang at 11:05 am on 27 March. This is the first international commercial flight back to Da Nang, after almost 2 years, since the outbreak in early April 2020.

As soon as the plane landed, 160 passengers were shocked by the welcome of the water cannon. Walking down the stairs, they were presented with flowers by the city representative. Miss World Vietnam 2019 Luong Thuy Linh was also present to welcome international guests back to Da Nang.

Taking a few minutes to complete the prescribed medical procedures, Mrs. Wood took her twin sons to the international passenger terminal, while her husband took care of the luggage. Once at the door, the mother, who has traveled to Ho Chi Minh City many times, stopped for a moment to see her children enjoying a lion dance performance in Vietnam.

He waved to everyone and received applause from many Da Nang people who came to the airport to welcome overseas Vietnamese from many European and American countries to fly to Singapore to visit their homeland after years of separation. “I am very happy to be back in Da Nang after two years of the epidemic,” said Mrs Wood.

The female tourist was “very happy to receive such a warm welcome”. His family booked a room at the seaside resort to stay for a few days. “We will walk around the ancient cities of Da Nang and Hoi An, swim in the sea and enjoy lots of delicious food,” he added.

With a friend traveling to Da Nang, Mr Ben, a Spaniard, said that it was his first time coming to Da Nang. “Travelling in Vietnam is now very easy,” he said, adding that he would stay in Da Nang for three days, then head to Hue to explore the monuments.

Nguyen Van Hung Vietnam overseas transit from the airport in the Netherlands to Singapore, then connect to Da Nang. He was happy when the city reopened. “We are abroad, but we really want to be able to return to our homeland to visit our family every year,” said Mr. Hung, adding that this time he will stay in Vietnam longer than before.

Speaking at the event to welcome the reopening of international routes, Mr Tran Phuoc Son, Deputy Chairman of the Da Nang City People’s Committee, said that after 2 years of being heavily affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, international routes were closed. Disruption makes the aviation and tourism industries face great challenges to stay afloat.

Before the epidemic, with an annual growth rate of about 18%-34% in the 2015-2019 period, Da Nang International Airport served more than 98,000 takeoff and landing flights, with more than 7.1 flights, thousand international visitors and 8.4 thousand domestic tourists in 2019. However, the epidemic in the last 2 years has caused fishing output to fall by more than 80%, income by more than 70% over the same period in 2019.

“Today’s international flight recovery event is not only the return of international flights, but also marks a more active development phase in the future to gradually restore the full route of international travel to Da Nang”, said Mr. Son, said that city leaders are committed to continuing to remove difficulties and obstacles to restoring tourism – aviation activities to the new normal.

Phan Kieu Hung, Deputy Director of Da Nang International Airport, also said that the reopening of international routes would greatly promote the development of international tourism, foreign relations, open investment flows and cultural exchanges between countries, towards the goal of sustainable economic growth.

On March 27, Da Nang welcomed two international flights. In addition to flight SQ172 which starts the regular route Singapore – Da Nang, with a frequency of 1 flight per day, the city also continues flights to Bangkok (Thailand), with flights carrying 150 passengers. This route has a frequency of 3 flights/week and can be adjusted according to market demand.

This morning, the Ministry of Tourism has prepared souvenirs to give to the first international guests to land at Da Nang international airport; Da Nang International Terminal Operations and Investment Joint Stock Company (AHT) sponsored a hot air balloon festival with 17 hot air balloons (3 hot air balloons can carry 4 to 6 passengers) at APEC Park airport along the Han River.

Vietnam has suspended all commercial flights with countries and territories around the world from early April 2020, amid the outbreak of the world’s strong Covid-19 epidemic. Since February 15, Vietnam Airlines began to reopen all regular international routes to the countries.

Incoming passengers must ensure that their conditions are in accordance with the regulations on epidemic prevention from the Ministry of Health. Therefore, upon boarding, guests must have a negative PCR test certificate for nCoV, which is valid for 72 hours; certificate of vaccination/vaccine passport or certificate of recovery from Covid-19.
