Russian border village was attacked, Ukrainian troops counterattacked strongly in Kharkiv
Roman Starovoit, governor of the Kursk region, wrote on the Telegram app that Ukrainian missiles hit three houses and a school in the border village of Alekseyevka. However, no one was injured in the incident.

In the northeastern region of Sumy, the Army General Staff Ukraine said the Russian side shelled across the border. Dmytro Zhyvytskyy, head of the Sumy military junta, accused Russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups of trying to cross the border.

Along the front lines in Luhansk and Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, Russian troops continued to attempt to advance in several areas but Kiev forces claimed to have repelled all these efforts. According to the General Staff of Ukraine, in the area of violent clashes around Severodonetsk, the Russians attacked the town of Syrotne but “suffered losses in the fighting and were forced to withdraw”.
Serhii Hayday, head of the Luhansk military junta, said that two hospital buildings and a manufacturing facility in Severodonetsk were hit by Russian shells, while the Popasna area was also shelled. A total of 10 civilians were killed in the bombardment.
In Lviv, western Ukraine, overnight Russian missile attacks damaged railway infrastructure near the town of Yavoriv, home to a major Ukrainian military base, which borders Poland. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.
Ukrainian forces counterattack in the northeast of Kharkiv
Ukrainian troops are advancing north and northeast of Kharkiv in a quick, week-long counterattack in the country’s second-largest city.
Oleh Syniehubov, the leader of Kharkiv’s government, told local radio that fighting was taking place northeast of the city, towards the town of Vovchansk, along the Russia-Ukraine border.
Vovchansk has become a supply route for Russian forces as they try to sustain their offensive efforts into the Donetsk and Luhansk regions further south. The disruption to that supply line could affect the Russians’ ability to increase their bombardment of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.
According to Syniehubov, the counter-attacks by Ukrainian forces have helped to reduce but not completely eliminate the Russian shelling of Kharkiv. The official said two people were killed and nine injured in the past 24 hours.
Vadym Denysenko, an adviser to Ukraine’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, told state television on May 17 that the Russian side also suffered “great losses”, but did not disclose the exact number of damage.
