Stepmother delivered a box with 30 gold trees before she died

The day I went to college, my mother passed away, and my father took another step. The thing I hate the most is that my father married a maid. In my mind, I always thought that those two had feelings since before my mother died.

I know that maid’s family is not rich. She and her husband are divorced and are raising two young children. After marrying my father, stepmother bring two children to live together. So since the day my father got married, I rarely came home to visit. Every year I only come back on my mother’s death anniversary, on New Year’s Day or summer vacation, I don’t come back but look for a part-time job.

When my father called, I answered the phone through the speaker to finish the story, and my stepmother called me and didn’t answer the phone. The day I got married, it was only held at my work place, invited my father and uncle on the paternal side, but did not allow my stepmother to attend.

When I had children, many times my stepmother wanted to take care of me but I did not agree. The times she sent delicious food to my wife and I in the countryside, I was very upset and asked her not to send it anymore.

Last week, my father told me that my stepmother was seriously ill, difficult to recover, I should go back to my hometown to visit her for the last time. I told my father frankly, there is no blood relation between me and her, no visitation.

It wasn’t until my stepmother called my wife, she advised me for 2 days straight, that I finally agreed to visit her for the last time to satisfy everyone.

Looking at her very thin and pale, I tried to ask a few questions to finish the story. When there were only two people left in the room, she suddenly handed me a small box. Stepmother said: “I know you really hate this woman, I don’t blame you. Before your mother died, she wanted me to marry your father, to take care of him. My biological mother gave me a box with 30 gold trees, saying that when I grew up, I would give it to you.”

I said why didn’t she use that gold to send her children to college? The stepmother said that life is not a lie, so death must be pure. She would rather let her children suffer than use gold that was not hers.

I collapsed by my mother’s bed apologizing. I promise to take care of her two children through college. Only then can my heart be at ease.
