Ukraine says it found US microchips in weapons confiscated from Russia

Specifically, at least 8 American microchips were found inside the Barnaul-T air defense system of Russia . These chips are said to be manufactured by US technology companies such as Intel, Micrel, Micron Technology and Atmel Corp.

In the Pantsir air defense system, the Ukrainian military said it found at least five US chips from manufacturers AMD, Rochester Electronics, Texas Instruments and Linear Technology.

When analyzing the Kh-101 cruise missile, Ukraine found at least 35 chips of American origin. When “dissecting” the electro-optical system of the Ka-52 “Crocodile” helicopter, at least 22 microchips from Texas Instruments, Altera USA and Micron Technology were found.

Follow The Defense Post, the discovery of American microchips in Russian weapons has provided a more detailed look at the source of Moscow’s imports of weapons parts. Analyst Skip Parish assessed that this showed Russia’s dependence on Western technology.

Most of the chip manufacturing companies mentioned in the article said that they no longer do business with Moscow, while others denied the information of Ukrainian intelligence.

The origin of the microchips found in Russian weapons is currently unknown. But these chips are not necessarily sourced directly from the manufacturers. There is also a large (and largely unregulated) market for recycled chips, mainly coming from China.

In addition to microchips, it is reported that Russia is using weapons from France, Germany, and some other European Union (EU) member states in the operation in Ukraine.

At least 10 EU countries are believed to have supplied military equipment worth €346 million to Moscow despite a ban on the transport of engines and weapons (which was enacted after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014).
