Deer raising youth starts a business with an annual income of nearly half a billion dong
Commercial deer farming is a new but highly effective start-up model of Mr. Nguyen Hoang Viet in Phu Thanh A hamlet, Phu Kiet commune, Cho Gao district, Tien Giang province. This rather unique breeding model can be replicated, especially for rural youth when entering the entrepreneurial path.
At just 31 years old, Nguyen Hoang Viet is very busy every day with the care of the 40 star deer farm and the processing of deer antler products. Mr. Viet said, formerly worked as a marketing officer of a dairy company in Ho Chi Minh City. During a business trip in Ha Tinh province, he discovered a very unique and highly effective commercial star deer farming model, so he was determined to learn to pursue this novel breeding model.
A star deer prepares for velvet harvest.
In 2019, Mr. Viet resigned from his job in Ho Chi Minh City. Ho Chi Minh City to return home to start a business. He did not hesitate to go to the star deer farm in Ha Tinh and asked to stay at the deer farm for 1 month to learn and learn the craft of animal husbandry. When he mastered the techniques of raising and taking velvet, he bought 15 adult deer to build a barn in the family garden.
Thanks to the good application of knowledge and breeding techniques through practice and research and collection of documents, books and newspapers, the deer herd of Vietnam grew quickly and after 8 months they harvested velvet; The female deer after 7 months of rearing also reproduce satisfactorily. Up to now, this young man’s star deer farm has 40 animals and he also provides breeding stock for 3 other young people inside and outside the locality to raise about 30 animals.
Because the star deer farming model is very new and scarce, the output of deer seed and antler velvet is very favorable. Mr. Viet sells adult deer for 50 million VND/pair, baby deer 30 million VND/pair. Particularly raw deer antler he sells for 15 million VND/kg. Currently, from deer antler velvet, he has processed 4 products serving the Eastern and Western medicine industries such as pharmaceuticals and nutritious foods for human health, including honey-soaked deer antler velvet, deer antler velvet, and velvet wine. deer antler powder and deer antler powder. The output of these products is very easy, and he supplies them to distributors and shops in the area; at the same time selling online… not being dumped.
Although I have only been with this model for more than 2 years, the initial success is very positive. In 2021, from raising deer, he has an income of more than 400 million VND. According to Mr. Viet, deer are easier to raise than some other livestock in the locality because of their omnivorous habits, less disease, saving land area and less effort to take care of. His deer farm is built with strong steel frames, divided into many small cells; Each box has 1 deer. Deer food is mainly grasses and crops grown in 3,000 square meters of garden land, limited to industrial food.
“In order for the star deer farming model to be effective, firstly, it must ensure an adequate food source all year round to ensure freshness and greenness. Second, the barn must be built with the correct technique, each deer building a barn must be at least 2×2 meters; The third is the problem of hygiene and prevention, must use biological padding to keep the barn dry and clean, so that there are less diseases. In particular, the stage of deer growth must be supplemented with fine food so that the quality and weight of the velvet can be high, and the price can be sold,” added Nguyen Hoang Viet.
Mr. Huynh Phu Thai – a young man in Hoa Tinh commune, Cho Gao district has had the process of learning techniques and buying deer seed from Mr. Nguyen Hoang Viet to return to start his business. Mr. Thai said, raising a star deer will give you about 10 million VND/year. “After 1.5 years of rearing, now the family’s total herd of deer has reached ten, giving higher economic efficiency than raising cows. The cost of food and care has also decreased, but the output is very stable, so it is possible to stick with this model for a long time, “said Mr. Thai.

“Mr Viet’s model of raising deer for velvet is very suitable for the economic development conditions of union members, young people and local people. The Youth Union of Phu Kiet Commune has created conditions for union members and young people to go on tours to expand the model, facilitate access and learn to replicate this model,” said Secretary of the commune Doan Phu Kiet – Mr. Tan Hoang shared.
Currently, Mr. Nguyen Hoang Viet is very passionate about deer farming and is doing the procedures to establish the Southwest Star Deer Cooperative; at the same time, continue to guide and help local youth and farmers who need to raise deer for family economic development.
“My future orientation will be to build a cooperative as a focal point to provide seed for local people as well as the southwestern provinces. At the same time, promoting production, deeper processing and branding of deer antler products to consumers, so that they can buy products, buy seeds, and output for farmers when they contact associated with cooperatives”, Mr. Nguyen Hoang Viet said his determination.
