This is the battery life that the iPhone must trade off when using 5G

Apple has gradually introduced 5G into nearly its entire product line, starting with the iPhone 12 and most recently the iPhone SE, iPad Air, and iPad mini. While we’ve known for a long time that 5G can affect battery life, a new test from The Wall Street Journal shows the actual impact.

The WSJ admits its test is not perfect and is not scientific, just a simple usability test. The battery life test was performed by playing YouTube videos with “automatic” quality on iPhone SE 3, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 mini and iPad Air models, repeating on 5G and LTE.

The test results clearly show that 5G has a significant impact on iPhone and iPad battery life.

As you can see in the chart above, the iPhone SE 3 lasted an hour longer on 4G than when connected to 5G. The iPhone 13 mini and iPad Air each lasted about 1.5 hours – 2 hours, while the iPhone 13 Pro lasted more than 2.5 hours.

An important note is that none of the iPhones participating in this test connected to the super-strong 5G mmWave. Instead, they connect to 5G sub-6GHz, offers slower speeds than mmWave, but theoretically has less impact on battery.
