The Future Museum was created by Killa Design and authorized by the Future Dubai Foundation. The building sits on top of a podium built to mimic a verdant hillside, including around 100 different species of local trees and plants.

The building is 77 meters high, with a stainless steel and glass exterior decorated with inspirational quotes by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and also Ruler (Emir) of Dubai, pen. These sayings were later transformed into calligraphy by artist Mattar Bin Lahej.

To create this intricate look, engineers resorted to complex robotic systems to manufacture more than a thousand different facade visors. They then took about 18 months to install the panels into the structural framework of the building. A sophisticated LED system is also arranged to illuminate the large space in the middle of the building.

“77 meters high, the facade is made of stainless steel and glass, and consists of 1,024 separate panels, each created by robots and special algorithms.” Future Museum press release introduces. “The number of these plates also has its own meaning. It represents a basic unit of a computer’s digital information storage system, which is the kilobyte, and each kilobyte is equivalent to 1,024 bytes. Windows creates Arabic letters will transmit light inside during the day. And at night, it will shine light at a range of 14 km by energy-saving LED system.”

Due to the complex geometry of the building and the fluid calligraphy, each slab is individual and unique. No two panels are alike. Each part must be prefabricated and manufactured individually, with many prototypes designed and manufactured before the perfect formulation can be achieved. They are all manufactured using automated robotic arms. Each surface plate is made up of four layers and is created in a complex 16-step process. The precision and complexity to create them means they can only produce a few panels per day.

The interior area of the museum is 30,000 square meters, spread over seven floors, and has no columns. Visitors entering the lobby area are quickly captivated by the decorative ceiling and spiral staircase, from which they can ascend to the museum’s many floors and view the interactive displays. They also include an area dedicated to children, another area to experience future technologies and a digital entertainment zone featuring content about the Amazon rainforest. The museum also has its own event space, wellness area, and gift shop and restaurant.

The building also boasts a number of notable energy-saving features. Rainwater and wastewater are collected to water the greenery, while its façade is designed to reduce the thermal effects of the sun, both inside the building and in its vicinity. In addition, it is also advertised to use some necessary energy from renewable sources, but has not been explicitly announced.
