Requesting sperm from a hospital sperm bank to get pregnant is not uncommon these days. However, in the past, when the control and management of the sperm bank and the artificial insemination process was lax, many cryptic stories occurred. For example, the family of Cheryl Rousseau, 73, in the state of Florida (USA) attracts a lot of attention.
Back in time more than 40 years ago, Ms Cheryl and her husband, Mr Peter, wanted to have children together, even though they both had children of their own from 2 broken marriages. It is worth mentioning that Mr Peter had a vasectomy, so he lost his ability to reproduce. They still wanted to have more children, so they decided to resort to the medical method of requesting sperm from a stranger and using intrauterine insemination (IUI).

In March 1977, the procedure was performed at Vermont Central Hospital. During the procedure, Cheryl was taken to an additional room at the hospital and asked to remove her pants from the waist down while Mr Coates went to an adjacent room for five minutes. When he returned, he injected sperm into Cheryl’s womb and told her to cover her legs for a few minutes.
After that, Mrs. Cheryl pregnant succeeded and gave birth to a baby girl in December of the same year. Cheryl’s daughter, Barbara (now 44), is the one to come up with the shocking truth.
In particular, in 2018, Barbara’s son suddenly felt pain in his hip for no apparent reason. After an examination, the family found that the boy’s illness was caused by a genetic defect and Barbara began to find out the truth using a website linked to a DNA sample. He was also assisted by geneticists at the University of California at Berkeley and discovered that his biological father was Dr. John Coates, who had inseminated his mother that year. That is, Dr Coates arbitrarily uses his own sperm to fertilize patients without consent.

Barbara initiated a civil lawsuit against Coates in 2018. At a federal court hearing on March 30, the jury ruled that Mr Coates must pay Cheryl USD 5.25 million (over 119 billion VND), including a fine of USD 5 million and USD 250,000 in fees compensation.
At trial, Cheryl’s family attorney, Celeste Laramie, insisted that the court’s decision was fair. She says: “Through this sentencing and compensatory ruling, the jury has sent a message to any doctor who is contemplating lying to their patient or using their own sperm to fertilize a patient. This behavior will have serious consequences.”
Dr Coates initially denied having a father with Ms. Barbara but then lowered her head to plead guilty. She is currently facing a similar lawsuit from another woman, Shirley Brown, from Colorado.
