3 CLASSIC symptoms of jawbone tumor- The disease that once caused Long Chun to deform his face

On the morning of December 16, 2020, Long Chun announced his withdrawal from the program “Familiar Faces” to treat jaw bone tumor. After recording episode 4, he went to the doctor and discovered that a tumor had eaten up most of the right jawbone. He immediately returned to Hanoi for another diagnosis. After a week of waiting for the results of the biopsy, Long Chun broke down and cried a lot because he was afraid that he would “receive the death sentence” when he was just starting his career.

“The scary disease is that during the growth of the tumor, Long Chun did not experience any symptoms. After filming episode 4 of the show Familiar Faces, I noticed that the gum area was a bit dark. At that time, Long went to the hospital where he had his teeth done, that’s why his gums were like that. jaw bone enamel.

If I hadn’t asked the dentist that day, it would have been extremely dangerous. Because the more the tumor grows, the deeper it is in the bones, so it’s best for everyone to have regular check-ups every 6 months.” Long Chun shared on Tik tok.

To treat, Long Chun had to remove the tumor and the entire right jawbone. Then, the doctors used Long Chun’s fibula to graft onto his jawbone. This can help to reduce the distortion of his face. However, due to the unsuitable bone, Long had an infection of bone rejection, had to remove the fibula, wait another three to six months before continuing to use the fibula in the other leg to continue the bone graft.

Currently, Long Chun’s health is stable, although his face is still swollen. Experiencing lengthy anesthesia operations, Long Chun called it a scary experience but made him stronger.

So, what is a jaw tumor and how dangerous is it?

Jawbone tumors can appear in the upper or lower jaw, benign or malignant. Mandibular melanoma is a serious type of bone cancer that can deform the face and cause cosmetic problems.

1. Benign jaw bone tumors

Cystic cysts: It is the most common benign tumor of the jaw, accounting for more than 50% of all benign jaw tumors. Cystic enamel tumors are caused by teeth, most of which are tumors in the lower jaw bone.

Tooth-forming solid enamel: This case will be rarer than cystic adenomas, which tend to be associated with limited growth, with no or little recurrence after surgery.

Crown cysts are in the group of jaw cysts caused by teeth: Crown cysts appear more in the upper jaw than in the lower jaw, covering the crown of a tooth, usually an erupting permanent tooth.

2. Malignant tumors of the jawbone

A squamous cell carcinoma that invades bone through the alveolar socket. Malignant tumors can be mandibular or maxillary and can involve any part of the jawbone in the oral cavity. There are two basic types of malignancies of the jaw: primary and secondary.

Primary bone cancer: It originates from inside the jawbone, is a fairly rare type of cancer. These include:

Enamel tumors are the most common carcinomas, occurring during tooth formation, most commonly in the posterior part of the mandible. Enamel tumors invade slowly and rarely metastasize. On radiographs, enamel tumors often appear with multifocal contrast or soap bubbles. Treatment is by extensive peritumoral resection and jaw reconstruction if appropriate.

Dental tumor is usually a tumor of the lower jaw bone in young people, related to the process of tooth formation, affecting tooth follicles or tooth tissues. Dental tumors include osteosarcoma and fibroma. Absence of molars is suggestive of mixed odontomas.

Bone sarcoma, multiple myeloma, giant cell tumor, Ewing’s tumor.

– Secondary bone cancer: Is a malignant tumor of the jaw bone that originates from cells of a certain tumor in the body, breaks off and metastasizes to the jaw bone. The most common is squamous cell carcinoma that originates in the soft tissues in the oral cavity. Some of the cells of this cancer migrate to the jawbone and begin to form a tumor in the lower jawbone.

3. Symptoms of malignant jaw bone tumor

The main symptoms of malignancy of the jaw are the result when the tumor grows, pressing on teeth, blood vessels, nerves and putting pressure inside the jawbone.

Symptoms of jaw cancer include:

Bone damage and severe pain: Pain in the jaw is not a prominent symptom in the early stages, but it is a typical symptom of bone cancer in the later stages. The more the tumor grows, the more intense the pain becomes. The pain is dull, constant, can spread to the face or neck if the tumor presses on a nerve. Depending on the location of the jaw bone tumor, chewing can also cause pain. The surrounding tissue affected by the cancer will feel soft to the touch.

– Swelling and/or facial deformity: Malignant tumors of the jaw, of any size, can cause swelling in the face or in tissues inside the mouth, such as the palate or alveolar margins.

– Loose teeth and loss of unknown cause: Loose teeth and a lot of loss in a short period of time but with no known cause can be an early warning sign of bone cancer. The tumor affects the jawbone around the gums, softening and then destroying the bone, leading to loose teeth.

Jawbone melanoma, like all other tumors in the body, the earlier it is diagnosed and treated, the better the chance of success. Therefore, regular dental examination is not only for oral health care, but also helps to detect early signs of abnormalities of bones, teeth and oral cavity.
