Lately, a series of unfortunate events happened to teenagers. This is a wake-up call for parents on how to educate, direct, care for and share with children at this age.

TS.BS Tran Thi Hong Thu – Deputy Director of the Mai Huong Day Mental Hospital said that, not now but for a long time, the problem of psychological disorders, depression and anxiety has always existed, especially with Adolescents being in a period of psychological change. . However, most children have not been detected and intervened early for timely treatment. Most children are only allowed to intervene when there are consequences – this is very unfortunate.

One of the reasons why children suffer from psychological effects, anxiety and depression comes from the pressure of learning and the high expectations of parents for their children. In fact, Doctor Hong Thu had accepted many minors for examination and treatment due to academic pressure.

Doctor Hong Thu is consulting a male student to come for a follow-up examination after psychiatric treatment.

Usually, a male student named NVC (who is studying at a high school in Hai Phong) commits suicide twice a week with pesticides, luckily both are detected and treated on time, so they are not life-threatening.

However, parents still consider their child to be impulsive for a while at puberty, so they don’t take him to the doctor. After the incident, every day they still set strict requirements for their children to study in class or study abroad in order to study abroad after graduation. Only when relatives advise too much, parents accept to take their children to the doctor.

At the hospital, Doctor Thu was very surprised when C told me that: “Every day going to school with me is like torture, but my parents forced me to study, I myself did not dare to disobey.” In particular, the C disorder is not new, but it has been burning since 2 years ago, and this male student has shown some acts of resistance as well as avoiding eating with his parents (with the excuse of being busy studying)…

“The male student shared what made me very sad, namely, that C himself knew he had psychological problems and researched online to find ways to “free” himself. As for parents, even though they know that their child is experiencing psychological changes, they think that it is a stagnation of adolescence, so they don’t care. According to them, the most important task for children is to get good grades and study well,” said dr.

After the examination, the student was diagnosed with depression, Dr. Thu accepted and immediately treated C, besides that he also met his parents to advise them to pay more attention to the psychological well-being of their children. extracurricular activities… “After the treatment period, male students are better and no longer have suicidal thoughts as before”, Dr. Thu share.

Not only the cases above, it turns out that there are many heartbreaking events that occur when children do not achieve the academic results that their parents expect. Therefore, parents need to pay attention, share with their children, know the interests and aspirations of their children to direct their children in the right direction and according to their passion. Don’t force your child to study too much (if you don’t like it), don’t compare your child to be like this, that friend and let go of the idea of forcing your child to follow what your parents want.

Timely detection and referral to a psychiatrist are essential in treatment and subsequent recovery.

Thu also recommended that parents need to equip themselves with the knowledge to be able to recognize and detect psychological disorders, anxiety disorders and take their children to the doctor on time to avoid unfavorable cases.

In particular, if a child has any of the following symptoms, Dr. Hong Thu advises parents to take them to a psychiatrist and psychologist for early detection and timely treatment:

– Sleep disturbances: Insomnia is a common symptom, accounting for 80% of children with depressive disorders. While children’s sleep deprivation is often a problem because they are at the “eat and sleep age,” almost very few children lose sleep. However, some people sleep longer than usual.

– Afraid to communicate, the child will withdraw and participate less in family activities. Some children can be normal in class but come home angry, or argue with their parents.

– Fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss. There are cases of children not losing weight but not eating and drinking, often feeling tired.

Children feel bored and confused.

– Children have difficulty concentrating, poor academic results…

– Some children have gastrointestinal disorders, some children will experience physical symptoms such as back pain, shoulder pain…

– When depression is severe, children will experience dissatisfaction, negative thoughts, blame themselves and often have suicidal thoughts…
