Highland Titles conservation organization on March 28 set a Guinness World Record for the largest insect hotel with a volume of 199.9 m3.
The Highland Titles Insect Hotel is located in the Highland Titles nature reserve in Duror, Scotland. The project was completed in 6 months with the participation of 7 employees.
The new building will be home to millions of insects such as ants, ladybugs, beetles, bees and butterflies. They will also continue to provide food for other animals in the nature reserve such as bats, porcupines, birds and badgers.
To build the insect hotel, Highland Titles used Picea sitchensis wood, bricks, bamboo, wood chips, forest bark, wildflower seeds, terracotta pipes and netting. An expert reviewer from the Guinness World Records organization came to confirm the hotel, which is now home to many animals. The old record belonged to the 89.4 m3 insect hotel in Warsaw, Poland.
“We’re very excited. It’s a great way to convey the message of conservation and also a way to make use of the wood of the tree. Picea sitchensis non-native which we are phasing out over the years. Picea sitchensis It’s not good for biodiversity so it’s great that they have some benefits now,” said Stewart Borland, manager of the Highland Titles Nature Preserve.
Highland Titles purchased this land in 2006, when it was a plantation Picea sitchensis ineffective. In the late 1980s, trees were planted on plantations inappropriately and without consideration for biodiversity, according to Douglas Wilson, CEO of Highland Titles.
“Using these very trees to benefit nature demonstrates that the world has changed and we hope our efforts will inspire others. We would be delighted if anyone did. That’s going to break records in the future,” Wilson said.
