The reason is that Vietnam is located in an endemic area with high rates of hepatitis B and hepatitis C. high, cirrhosis due to hepatitis B, C virus infection is high.Besides, in Vietnam, men abuse alcohol leading to cirrhosis due to alcohol is also common.“.

At Bach Mai Hospital, the group of patients diagnosed with liver cancer is also in the top position. Most of the patients who came to the hospital were in the intermediate or late stage when the tumor size was over 5cm, there were even cases of liver failure, liver and lung metastases.

“During the recent Covid-19 epidemic, it is very sad because the number of cancer patients visiting the clinic has increased and is at a later stage than before. Therefore, people in the high-risk group for liver cancer need to be treated. periodic examination, evaluation and follow-up”, Associate Professor Phuong said.

Subjects prone to liver cancer

Liver cancer in its early stages has almost no symptoms. Therefore, patients who are found to have liver cancer at an early stage are often by chance ultrasound or blood tests for tumor markers.

Liver cancer with obvious symptoms is usually in an early stage. Typical symptoms encountered in most patients are pain in the right lower quadrant, fatigue, and loss of appetite.

At a later stage, the patient will have increased pain in the right lower quadrant and have enlarged liver, jaundice, yellow eyes, distended abdomen due to abdominal fluid…

Associate Professor Cam Phuong said that subjects at high risk of liver cancer are often found in people with cirrhosis caused by hepatitis B virus infection, hepatitis C virus infection, or patients with cirrhosis caused by alcohol, fatty liver, aflatoxin poisoning, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C.

For patients in the high-risk group for liver cancer, it is necessary to periodically screen with abdominal ultrasound and test for a tumor marker in the blood, AFP, in some places with conditions, AFP can be tested. , AFP-L3, PIVKA II.

Assoc. Phuong noted: “All cases of men over 40 years old with cirrhosis due to any cause should periodically screen for liver cancer. If liver cancer is detected early, the 5-year survival rate is 70-80. %.

Depending on the stage of the disease, liver cancer patients will be surgically removed the lobe containing the tumor, liver transplantation, radiofrequency ablation, liver tumor microwaves, chemotherapy embolization, selective radiotherapy with microspheres Y-90 radiation, targeted therapy, immunological.
