Chinese schools install tight fences like “prisons” to prevent students’ intentions to “end their lives”

The upcoming college entrance exam season is also the most stressful period in every student’s life. Under heavy exam pressure, many students chose to sacrifice their lives to escape.

China is famous for placing great emphasis on academic achievement and examination regime. Accordingly, many tragic incidents occurred, causing the public to stir every time the exam season came.

On the morning of March 29, 2015, a student was killed by jumping off a building at No. 2 Hengshui High School (Hebei, China). She died after being taken to the hospital. The police and the education department intervened immediately, conducting an on-site investigation and asking for relevant information.

On the day of the incident, an investigation team consisting of personnel from education, police, disciplinary inspectors and other relevant departments was formed to clarify the cause.

It is known that the case of a student jumping to his death in March 2015 is not the first case that happened at No. 2 Hanh Thuy High School. Before that, at about 3 pm on October 10, 2014, a 12th grade female student jumped off the 6th floor of the school building. After that, the female student was taken to the hospital for emergency but to no avail.

In April 2015, photos of the balustrade area installed in the teaching building of Hanh Thuy No. 2 High School were spread on social networks, causing a stir in public opinion. It is known that this move is related to the annual Gaokao contest.

The Gaokao is China’s most important and competitive university entrance exam. The Gaokao season is also a time when students have to face heavy mental pressure. In China, there are many students who commit suicide because they can’t stand the pressure.

Hengshui No. 2 High School in Hebei Province is considered one of the best in China, with outstanding academic results and many students who have passed into prestigious universities. The school is famous for its strict management of students’ lives and studies.

Hanh Thuy No. 2 High School tries to prevent suicides by installing more floor-to-ceiling metal fences on each floor of the building. The corridors are enclosed. Outside the barrier, the school also put up a lot of red banners cheering for the Gaokao exam.

One of the content on the banner is: “Successful college entrance exam depends on every successful school day, every successful class hour and every successful lesson”.

The move to install the railing fence of Hanh Thuy school has caused public opinion to be divided into two opposing opinions: “It’s like a prison”, “The purpose is only to prevent children from doing stupid things”, “The school does everything for the benefit of the students”,…
