Tonight, a female poet publicly denounced the rape of a colleague from 23 years ago. The incident has been too long, the statute of limitations has passed, and will certainly make many people question why it took so long.

I think there’s nothing wrong with asking questions, but those are questions that hurt the victim (if they really are). And, that is also the reason why so many victims have accepted to silently suffer, accept to let the scumbags roam around.

I know a lot of assholes who have gone about their lives with the satisfaction of sexually oppressing their co-workers without paying the price. Because their victims were unwilling or unable to speak out.

They cannot because it is not easy to verify that acts of sexual oppression take place in hidden corners.

They can’t because they don’t appreciate their loved one’s ability to endure emotional pain.

They can’t because of work, career, and stereotypes about virginity.

They cannot because of their lack of faith in the fairness of the judges.

And most of all, they can’t because they can’t bear the cynical questions and doubts of people when the matter has not been clarified.

They don’t want to lose because they think they lose more than they gain.

They don’t want to because they think the past will rest in peace and the pain will ease over the years.

They don’t want to face judgmental questions from people they don’t know.

Whether you can’t, or don’t want to, the biggest cause is still people’s skepticism. Because cynicism is a pleasure.

Skepticism gives people a feeling of being rational, intelligent, and wise. Because being skeptical and asking questions means we have the opportunity to show our strength, wisdom, and superiority.

Why did she let him do this to her?

If it were me, I’d kick him out. I am brave and strong!

If it were me, I would find a way to trap him for proof. I’m so smart!

If it were me, I would throw that job away to do something else rather than let him oppress me. I am so confident and talented!

If it were me, I would tell my loved ones for protection. I am so lucky!

You’re strong, you’re confident, you’re smart, you’re talented, you’re lucky… congratulations! Especially congrats on not encountering assholes who can in one way or another suppress your above abilities to make you a victim.

But what if you are lucky, talented, brave? I think if that’s the case then try not to show off those good points by asking questions that are colored with judgment and skepticism in this situation. Because those questions, because your superiority doesn’t make fortunes, is not something that can help victims of sexual oppression (if they are).

If you think the accused person is unjust. Don’t worry, it’s always easier for them to speak up to protect themselves than their accuser (if they are really unjustly accused).

The whistleblower, by deciding to report something like this, has paid a lot of money. In the case of being sued again for slander, the price they have to pay is all of their lives. Therefore, there is no need to pretend to be superior to them.
