Rewards for players or “contributing” to breaking rank?

Riot is adding more than 300 challenges to League of Legends
The new system will cover more than 300 Challenges individually, 2700 tokens and more than 100 titles. There are six categories of challenges you will be going through including different sections related to skills in the game. Consists of:
– Imagination: Challenges focus on goals.
– Expertise: Involves mastery of champions and lane roles.
– Teamwork & Strategy: Focus on your ability to support and work as a team.
– Veterancy: Challenges for veterans in the game.
– Collection: Challenges involving collecting loot such as champions, skins or in-game icons
– Legacy: Time limited challenge.
By completing Challenges, League of Legends players will receive rewards. They will earn badge progression with Achievement Points, which will show up on player profiles.
The loading screen of the waiting game will show the image of the Challenge
After upgrading the Challenges up a specific level you will also earn new Trophies which you can display on your profile. They will also show up in the loading screen and in your friends list.
It is predicted that this feature will be updated and appear in version 12.9 of League of Legends.
