Frustrated because my child was admitted but couldn’t enter the school

HanoiWhen she received the notification that her son had been accepted into grade 6 of Luong The Vinh Middle & High School, Lan was happy but then disappointed when she could not enroll.

On the morning of April 16, according to the school’s announcement about the admission of her children, Ms. Lan needed to be present at Luong The Vinh Middle School & High School, Tan Trieu campus from 8:00 am to 11:30 am, according to morning working hours. Arriving at school at nearly 9am, she saw that a large number of parents were given a numbered slip to submit their application. When asked the admissions department about this form, the school said that it was no longer distributed because there were enough numbers to work in the morning and return in the afternoon.

Learning from experience, at 13:30 pm, right at the time of starting work, she was present but still could not issue tickets. Only parents with tickets from the morning are called in to check in. The rest of the participants registered their names on an A4 sheet of paper. You also follow.

At more than 6pm, one hour past the working time as announced, Luong The Vinh school stopped all enrollment activities and made an appointment with parents at 8:00 am this morning on April 17.

After waiting all afternoon but could not enter school, she and many parents became frustrated. “Obviously I arrived at the specified time, my child also passed the exam, why can’t I go through the admission procedures for him,” Lan said.

Frustrated with the way the school works, but to make sure the child’s seat, there are parents who came today from 2am. At this time, the school is not working. Those who arrive early make their own lists on A4 sheets of paper for the school to call in order. At 8:00 a.m., the admissions committee worked, and there were 86 parents on the list. The school later said that it would only accept 50 more students this morning. Some parents who come after or at the bottom of the list start arguing, not even acknowledging this practice. The school fell into a deadlock situation, until more than 10 o’clock, it still could not work.

Ms. Van Lien Na, Vice Principal of Luong The Vinh Middle & High School, in charge of Tan Trieu campus, admitted there was turmoil in the organization, prompting a reaction from parents.

Ms. Na said that this year, the school recruited 360 6th grade students at each campus in Nam Trung Yen and Tan Trieu. The standard score is 480 points (total score of assessment of ability in Maths, Literature, English multiplied by a factor of 2 plus primary school grades and priority points).

School notices Only receive applications from students who meet the criteria on April 16 and will “stop enrolling when the quota is met”.. However, the Tan Trieu campus, according to the school, sent a message announcing the admission to 400 students, 40 more than the target. This is the reason why parents, even though their children have been announced to be admitted, still have to jostle in line to get the numbers early to avoid falling into the group of 40 candidates who lost their seats.

Many people think that Luong The Vinh school should prioritize admission for candidates with high to low scores instead of being early or late. However, Ms. Na said that this approach can cause the school to fall into the situation of having to recruit in batches and lack of candidates. “We still have to make sure there are enough students to keep the school running,” Ms. Na said.

With the way of announcing the admission to 400 students but the target is 360, the school confirms that the number of parents who cannot enroll their children is not much. The school will agree with this number on making a tentative list, if a student withdraws his application to transfer to another school, he will call them on the above list to enroll.

Before this explanation, one parent said he disagreed with the unprofessional way of organizing, especially the unclear form of the school’s announcement. “I don’t know how to explain it to my child, if I can’t enroll him in school,” she said.
