In the last 1-2 weeks, the price of live hog in many northern provinces has fluctuated around 53,000 – 58,000 VND/kg, up from 2,000 – 4,000 VND/kg since the end of last year. For breeders, this price is said to be break-even, if the herd does not suffer from disease or die suddenly.

Many small traders said, before pork price If it increases again, the transaction price is only about 50,000 – 55,000 VND/kg, 1,000 – 2,000 VND/kg higher than before the Lunar New Year.

Ngoc Lu commune, Binh Luc district, Ha Nam province is considered the largest pig raising capital in the North with more than 80% of families investing in livestock, sometimes the total herd is up to hundreds of thousands of heads. However, since the Lunar New Year, the whole commune has more than 300 households demolished barns and stopped raising livestock. One of the main reasons is the sharp drop in the price of live pigs, making farming not profitable enough.

Mr. Tran Van Chung, Vice Chairman of Ngoc Lu Commune People’s Committee and also the owner of a farm raising hundreds of pigs, said that since Tet, the price of live pigs sold at the barns of local livestock households has reached an average of 50,000 VND. – 51,000 VND/kg, an increase of 1,000 VND/kg compared to the Lunar New Year. This is too low a price and farmers are losing money when feed prices are high.

According to Mr. Chung, each piglet costs about 4.8 million, raising 1.4 quintals and 5 bags of 25kg bran costs about 2 million. The total cost is 6.8 million. If the selling price of live pigs is 50,000 VND/kg, the farmer earns 7 million VND. That is excluding the husbandry labor and investment in the barn for nearly 2 months.

“With the selling price of 50,000 – 51,000 VND/kg, farmers are not profitable, so they are not interested in re-herding. The whole commune now has nearly 100 households with about 15,000 pigs, down 80% compared to before Tet. Mr. Chung said.

At the livestock and poultry wholesale market in Ha Nam province, the price of live pigs transported by traders to trade in delicious and beautiful varieties is 55,000 VND/kg, the average type is 52,000 VND/kg, an increase of 1,000 – 2,000 VND/kg compared to the previous year. with the end of 2021.

Mr. Nguyen Van Cao, a trader in village 3, Boi Cau commune, said that for more than a month now, the trading and transportation of pigs has been very sparse. “Currently, few traders come to buy, so every day I can only sell 20 tons, down about 30 tons compared to more than 3 months ago. Mr. Cao said.

And Mr. Nguyen The Chinh, Head of the Management Board of the wholesale livestock and poultry market in Ha Nam province, said that because of the lack of warmth and the price at the market is lower than that of some other localities, for more than 3 months now, live pigs from other provinces have been sold. The South, Central and neighboring localities flock to wholesale markets, which decreased by more than 80%.

“Before Tet, every day the wholesale market receives about 1,000 tons, but since Tet until now, every day traders only transport from 60 to 100 tons.” Mr. Chinh said.

The price of pork in the market is so high

According to Mr. Chinh, although the price of pork is a bit cheap, the paradox is that the price of finished meat is above market Still expensive, there are places where the price of bacon is only up to 150,000 VND/kg, butt and shoulder meat is nearly 140,000 VND/kg. According to Mr. Chinh, with the price of 50,000 – 55,000 thousand VND/kg of live hog, the price of hook pork at 71,000 – 72,000 VND/kg is appropriate. When dividing and classifying finished products for sale, the price of butt and shoulder meat is about 80,000 VND/kg, pork belly is only 95,000 VND/kg, ribs are 80,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Tran Van Chung also gave an example, a 100kg pig bought by traders at the barn costs VND5.1 million, after meat, weighing the jaws, the gain is from 78-80kg. Through intermediaries such as traders to purchase and resell, the price increases from 2-3 (equivalent to 200,000 – 300/000 VND/head); slaughtering 500,000 – 700,000 VND/head, small traders selling at the market make a profit of about 800,000 VND each. Thus, adding all the costs, 6.9 – 7.1 million VND is already profitable for farmers as well as small businesses.

“With the selling price from 90,000 to 130,000 VND/kg of finished meat of all kinds, small traders have made too much profit, while farmers have to suffer single and double losses because of the price of animal feed, effort and investment in barns. but hog prices are too low, and consumers have to buy at too high a price. In fact, with the current live pig price, pork belly is only at 95,000 VND/kg, butt and shoulder are 90,000 VND/kg, ribs 70,000 VND/kg is reasonable. Mr. Chung said.

Mr. Chung said that the lower the price of live pigs, the more profit traders and retailers at wholesale markets will make, while consumers and breeders have to suffer.

“In fact, even though the price of live hogs is low, the slaughterhouses never reduce the price, and retail traders in the market also use that excuse not to lower the retail price, or even if it does, it will only drop. Unless the price of pork meat drops too low, 17,000 – 18,000 VND/kg as in 2017 – 2018 and there are no buyers, they will reduce. Mr. Chung said.

A survey by PV VTC News on April 20 at many markets in Hanoi such as Tu Hiep market (Thanh Tri), Green market (Cau Giay), Lang Ha market (Dong Da),… the prices of all kinds of pork are going up. at a high level, there is a clear sign of rapid increase: bacon ranges from 135,000 – 150,000 VND/kg; butt meat, shoulder price 120,000 – 135,000 VND/kg; thigh meat ranges from 130,000 to 140,000 VND/kg.

When asked, many small traders confirmed that the increase in live hog prices made their imports from slaughterhouses also increase, so they were forced to raise the retail price. However, the question is that when the price of live pork decreases, the price of meat is still high, the seller blames the “cost-consuming” intermediaries or because the price of gasoline increases. With many reasons as above, consumers always have to buy expensive pork is understandable.
