Quang Nam – Shrimp farming has never been so lossy

Along the coast of Binh Hai commune for many years, people have used it to raise white leg shrimp. Shrimp farming in the form of tarpaulin on the sand has brought high economic efficiency to the people. In general, over the years, shrimp farming has been quite stable, sometimes there are still losses, but there has never been a year where a series of shrimp farming households in the commune suffered heavy losses like this year’s first shrimp crop.

When asked about shrimp farming, most farmers shook their heads. Mr. Nguyen Tan Trai (37 years old, Binh Hai commune, Thang Binh district, Quang Nam), who has more than 16 years of experience in shrimp farming, lost nearly 500 million VND last year because dead shrimp could not be sold.

According to Mr. Trai, recently, due to poor quality seed, the shrimp that were released got sick and died a lot, not only in his 11 shrimp ponds but also in many other lakes in the commune.

The shrimp farming household of Mr. Ho Trung Tien and Binh Hai commune also suffered a heavy loss of nearly 300 million VND after the last shrimp crop. Then his family decided to release another batch of shrimp to improve. However, despite decades of experience in shrimp farming, combined with careful care from the stage of food, water source to environmental temperature for shrimp, etc., many shrimps still die, the remaining few do not grow. His family continues to lose money with the current shrimp crop. Mr. Tien shared: “Although the weather is erratic this year, it is still not significant, mainly because the seed is bad, keeps dropping it and dies, it must stop raising time, but not have the capital to raise a new crop. “.

Many other shrimp farming households in Binh Hai commune also faced the same situation. Mr. Pham Phu Nghinh’s shrimp pond in the commune also died in series, the capital of more than 200 million spent has no sign of recovery. It is known that seed suppliers also support, but only 1-2% and that amount is nothing compared to the capital spent.

Faced with such a heavy loss, many people here can only “hold their heads” and find a way to manage. But when asked about quitting this job, many people, including Mr. Nghinh, still insisted: “Only this shrimp farming can make up for its losses, because the capital is so large that our farmers work. Other jobs can never be removed.” So many people, despite many losses, still cling to this shrimp farming business to live.

Mr. Nguyen Van Chau, Chairman of Binh Hai Commune People’s Committee, said: “Compared to previous years, this year shrimp farming failed, many farming households failed 2-3 times. The commune also creates a mechanism for households to access capital sources, partly supporting them to maintain their jobs to stabilize the economy.
