Fruits and vegetables should not be kept close to each other

Some fruits, when ripe, produce ethylene, a gas that causes other foods to ripen sooner or rot more quickly.

Apples and carrots

Apples make other fruits ripen faster because they produce high amounts of ethylene. In addition, fruits that produce ethylene can also cause vegetables to spoil faster. Especially don’t put apples next to carrots. Otherwise, the carrots will taste bitter after only 2 weeks.

However, not all fruits and vegetables are sensitive to ethylene. Cherries, pineapples, garlic, grapefruit… can be safely stored together or next to these gas-generating things. The same applies to white potatoes, but not sweet potatoes.

Cucumber and Tomato

While cucumbers and tomatoes make a perfect pairing in a salad, storing them together isn’t good. Tomatoes contain a lot of ethylene while cucumbers are very sensitive to this substance, yellowing faster than normal.

Onions and potatoes

Onions need ventilation. Therefore, they should be stored in an open space or where you often open a mesh window (or use a fan), not exposed to direct sunlight.

Onions absorb moisture quickly but remain dry, while potatoes give off too much moisture. Over time, potatoes will grow roots and onions will sprout green shoots.

Banana and avocado

Avocados and bananas both produce ethylene, so if the avocado is overripe, keep it away from the banana. However, if you want the green avocado to ripen faster, you can put it in a paper bag, next to the banana. Ripe avocados should be kept in the refrigerator drawer for 2-3 days but should be used within two days.

Grapes and mango

Eating grapes as an excellent antioxidant (meaning it contributes to the repair of our cells) prevents many chronic diseases if eaten regularly. Note never wash bunch of grapes before storing, should wash before eating.

Grapes are very fragile and easily damaged when stored. They are not suitable next to any nearby fruit or vegetables, especially mangoes. Mangoes give off too much ethylene gas, which speeds up the ripening and rotting process.

Blueberries and Strawberries

Blueberries are mutated (ethylene-producing) fruits, strawberries do not fall into this group. If you store them together, the strawberries will overripe and spoil sooner than usual.

You can store unripe strawberries with blueberries together. However, if both berries are overripe, eat them within a few days.
