Trends of using electric vehicles in Ukraine

Fuel prices have increased continuously in the past time, making it a real challenge to fill up gas to travel by personal vehicle. In Ukraine, many people have converted to using bicycles and tram to avoid facing the ongoing fuel crisis.

At most gas stations in Ukraine, there is still a long line of vehicles waiting to fill up. Not to mention drivers are limited to 10 liters of petrol per purchase. Many residents in the capital Kiev are tired of this prospect.

Mr. Pavlo said, now he feels very lucky to be able to drive an electric car.

“No one wants to spend 1-2 days in line waiting to see if there’s petrol or diesel, or if they can fill up the tank to go to work. So people will switch to electric cars, saving waste. Waste of time” – shared by Pavlo Yarmusevich.

A car dealer in Kiev said they were “out of stock” of electric cars due to high demand. Customers now have to wait at least 10 days to order an electric car.

“People are going through a very difficult time. However, there are some people who are willing to buy an electric car to move to work, to transport their children. The popularity of this type of car is increasing and I look at it. The future of electric cars is clear.” – Ms. Tetyana Skyrda, a car salesman, shared.

For some other residents, bicycles have become a favorite means of transportation in the city, especially in the context that public transport has not yet fully resumed.

Mr. Bohdan said he spent most of his savings to buy a bicycle to work.

“I spent all of my remaining money to buy a bicycle. I have no regrets because cycling is fun.” – Mr. Bohdan Yaermolenko said.

In a speech at the end of April, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy promised that government officials would soon find a fuel supply system to prevent a large gap in supply and demand. However, he said it was a “difficult task” as fighting in Ukraine had destroyed the country’s fuel infrastructure and blocked many seaports.
