Build an “apocalyptic bunker” on the moon

The vault, called Svalbard, is used to store seeds in sealed aluminum bags, helping to protect the varieties of the world’s food supply from damage following disasters such as war or natural disasters.

Although built deep in the snowy mountain, strictly protected with 4 layers of doors, the Svalbard tunnel still has problems: Once flooded due to climate change in 2017.

However, the “apocalyptic vault” is still a good idea and Lonestar Company (Florida – USA) is determined to pursue this solution to protect human knowledge, instead of just seeds.

Mr. Christopher Stott, CEO of Lonestar, told the page The Register: “It is unthinkable that we are storing our most valuable assets, our knowledge and our data, right here on earth, where we are still dropping bombs and burning everything. We need it. Get your possessions off this planet, to a safe place.”

The Lonestar company plans to store human data in lava tubes on the moon. This calculation comes from the huge difference in lunar temperature. During the day it can reach 106 degrees Celsius, but at night it drops to -183 degrees Celsius. The surface of the moon also does not have a layer of protection against solar radiation like the earth’s atmosphere. Meanwhile, the moon’s lava tubes have a more stable temperature as well as prevent radiation from destroying the host.

In April, Lonestar signed two contracts with the American spacecraft design company Intuitive Machines to test the location of a data storage center on the moon. In fact, there is already a similar “doomsday vault” for open source data, also located in Svalbard.

By page IFL Science, the Lonestar Company secured a seat on Intuitive Machines’ IM-1 mission. The company Intuitive Machines is about to send a lander to the moon to perform software testing on a small amount of data stored on the lander for two weeks.

After that, Lonestar plans to “upload the first full data service to Intuitive Machines’ IM-2 to the lunar poles,” performing upload and download tests. The Lonestar company hopes future servers can connect to the earth.

This is not the first time scientists have proposed the idea of storing important knowledge of the earth on the moon. Not only Lonestar, the Italian Space Agency (ASI) also authorized Thales Alenia Space Aerospace Company to build data centers on the moon – part of the Artemis Moon program of the Aeronautics and Space Administration. American Space (NASA).

Meanwhile, a team from the University of Arizona (USA) proposed a special “moon crate”, hidden inside the moon’s lava tubes to preserve sperm, eggs and seeds of millions of species on the earth.
