Conjoined twins are rare, 200,000 babies have only 1 case

One of the two conjoined twin girls was born in critical condition. Ultrasound showed that 2 babies with liver adhesions had to be transferred to the National Children’s Hospital urgently. The surgery just took place on the afternoon of May 30.

Doctors said that conjoined twins are one of the rare birth defects in medicine with a rate of 1 in 200,000 babies born, of which 70% of pairs are female.

2 conjoined newborn babies, VN and VT (Lao Cai), were found to be a couple Twins conjoined when the mother was pregnant at 33 weeks. 7 weeks later, the two babies were elective caesarean section, birth weight was 2.2kg and 2.8kg, respectively.

After birth, baby VT had bleeding under the skin and pustules all over the body, but his health was stable. VN baby with respiratory failure requires oxygen, pustules all over the body, echocardiography detects atrioventricular septal defect, abdominal ultrasound shows 2 children with liver adhesions. After the treatment did not respond, the provincial hospital transferred to the National Children’s Hospital at midnight on May 28.

After being scanned, the doctors concluded that the baby VN had a total atrioventricular septal defect, 1 ventricle, 1 atrium, severe atrioventricular valve regurgitation, aortic disruption, arterial inversion, and pulmonary atrophy.

Doctors assessed that baby VT is in stable health, while VN is in critical condition day by day.

Both children were cared for and treated actively with the cooperation between the Neonatal Center and the Department of Internal Medicine.

Rarely conjoined twins, 200,000 new born 1 case-1

On the morning of May 30, the Board of Directors of the Central Children’s Hospital directed a consultation session with the specialties of Cardiology, Surgery, Neonatology, Diagnostic Imaging, Endocrinology – Genetics, Anesthesiology – Resuscitation, and Plastic Surgery. Craniofacial and other related specialties to plan early surgery, do their best to save both babies’ lives.

There were many difficulties in operating this conjoined twins.

Firstly, the two children’s livers are conjoined, half of the lower body of a Vietnamese child is being nourished by the hepatic artery of VT, when performing abdominal and liver separation, it can lead to many risks of shock and death. . But if not separated early, VT can lead to heart failure due to the need to carry blood to feed both bodies.

The second is that children have too many cardiovascular abnormalities. With a normal healthy child, life-saving congenital heart surgery is a very complicated technique, requiring high expertise and absolute precision. Therefore, for 2 sisters VN – VT, the surgery is more challenging than ever.

Preparing human resources for this surgery to take place on the afternoon of May 30, the National Children’s Hospital has mobilized many specialties, carefully calculated from pre-operative care, to anesthesia and the dissection process. improvisation during surgery; followed by a plan to resuscitate after surgery and “rescue” the premature heart’s faulty rhythm right after.
