Train derailed in southern Germany, many casualties
At least three people were killed and dozens more injured when a passenger train derailed in the southern German state of Bavaria today, June 3.
Deutsche Welle television channel quoted a local official as saying that at least 60 victims were injured, about 16 of them seriously. Authorities are carrying out a large-scale rescue operation at the scene.
According to a Bavarian police spokesman, the terrible incident happened at about 12:20 local time (17:20 Vietnam time) on June 3 when the train was full. It is not clear what caused the train to crash while en route to Munich.
Several carriages overturned and partly rolled onto the embankment north of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen ski resort in Bavaria, the Münchener Merkur newspaper reported.
A reporter at the scene shared on Twitter that rescue operations are still ongoing. Six helicopters were mobilized to take the injured to the hospital for treatment.
Railway operator Deutsche Bahn announced that part of the route between Munich and Garmisch-Partenkirchen was blocked and traffic had to be diverted.
