Going to Ukraine to fight, British mercenaries were mistakenly captured by the host country’s intelligence

British mercenaries under intelligence Ukraine caught wrong

Amid the escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine, mercenaries from many countries have come to Ukraine to support the Ukrainian army at the call of President Volodymyr Zelensky for an “international corps” to fight the Ukrainian army. Russian team.

According to the Mirror (UK), Jason Haigh is one of those mercenaries. Jason Hague, 34, is a retired British soldier who arrived in Ukraine in early February.

According to Haigh, early one morning when Russia launched a special military operation in eastern Ukraine, he was still asleep when he was awakened by his teammates.

Immediately he was fully armed and stormed out of his apartment in the capital Kiev. Walking down the street, Haigh said he could hear sounds passing through the building and lights flashing in the distance.

Later, Haigh joined the army guarding the Gostomel military airport. Recalling the scene at that time, the British mercenary confessed that the situation was very chaotic, no one knew what had happened and indeed he was also very scared at the time.

Due to intense fighting, Haigh’s group had to run into the nearby forest for shelter.

However, it was also at this time that Haigh was captured by Ukrainian intelligence. Because Haigh was carrying two walkie-talkies and a pistol, Haigh was suspected by Ukrainian soldiers as a “sabotage element” planted by Russia.

Haigh explained that radios were carried in case of an emergency such as a communication network disruption, but this still raised suspicions among Ukrainian spies.

Haigh was taken to a secure base and questioned for about three hours. Fortunately, after checking his mobile phone, Haigh was released.

Finally, out of fear, Haigh crammed onto a train to the Polish border and boarded a plane back home on March 4.

Dangerous situations

According to Guancha (China), the British Ministry of Defense previously said that the country would not send active-duty troops to fight in Ukraine because doing so would mean a NATO member in direct confrontation with Russia. If active British soldiers go to Ukraine to fight, they can be prosecuted for desertion, while veterans are not.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson also warned that “the UK has laws related to international conflicts and the UK government is not actively assisting its citizens to go to Ukraine to fight”.

In an interview with ITV recently, British Transport Minister Grant Shapps confirmed that four British active-duty soldiers had left the army to join the war in Ukraine.

The arrival of the British in Ukraine, he said, could exacerbate the current “dangerous situation”. He said: “It was a dangerous situation. Obviously, we [Anh] We want to make sure that the aid we give is done in a formal way, just like we provided anti-tank missiles before and after the conflict and we trained 22,000 Ukrainians“.
