In a statement on Twitter, Ahmad Yasir – a senior official in the Taliban government – stated that the Chinese Foreign Minister had come to Kabul and had meetings with officials in the Taliban government. After arriving in Kabul, Minister Wang Yi had a meeting with the head of the Taliban’s diplomatic service, Amir Khan Muttaqi.

Earlier, Minister Wang Yi went to the Pakistani capital Islamabad to attend a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

Since the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, the country has faced financial and humanitarian crises. China is expected to host a meeting next week with the participation of neighboring Afghanistan, giving the Taliban an opportunity to present its own assessment of the situation in the country.

China shares a 76-kilometer border with Afghanistan. Beijing wishes to maintain stability in the country to ensure border security and maintain strategic investment in neighboring Pakistan, where the China-Pakistan strategic economic corridor lies.

The Taliban government also wants to develop relations with China in terms of investment and economic support.
