Russia exercises on disputed islands with Japan
Russia on March 25 kicked off military exercises on a chain of islands, including those disputed with Japan.
According to Kyodo news agency, the exercise involved more than 3,000 troops along with hundreds of military equipment. The exercise follows a scenario where Russian soldiers will launch a counter-attack against a simulated enemy landing attempt.

This is the first Russian military exercise on the disputed islands off Hokkaido, Japan since the Russian Foreign Ministry withdrew from territorial negotiations with Japan on March 21.
The Russian Foreign Ministry then announced that it would not continue to negotiate a peace treaty with the Tokyo government in response to its sanctions against Moscow, related to the ongoing hostilities in Ukraine.
This group of islands, located north of Hokkaido, is known by Tokyo as the “Northern Territories” while Russia calls it the Southern Kurils. Disputes between the two countries around some of the islands in the island chain prevented Japan and Russia from signing a peace treaty after World War II.
