Thailand develops computing project “Government Cloud”

The Thai cabinet has tasked the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) and the state telecommunications company National Telecom with the establishment and operation of a huge central computing network called the Government Cloud. Government Cloud) to facilitate digital operations.

Thai Government Deputy Spokesperson Traisulee Traisoranakul said on March 29 that the first phase of the project will last for 3 years from 2023 to 2025 with a cost of 6.2 billion baht (about 186 million USD). This budget will be divided among categories including the fee for renting a cloud system with at least 25,000 virtual computers at 3.85 billion baht, the fee for renting 3,000 terabytes of data storage space for 578 million baht, security and login management service fee of 1.35 billion baht, database license fee of 229 million baht, cloud exchange fee of 150 million baht and 24/7 call center service fee of 57 million baht.

According to Ms. Traisulee, DES estimates that the Government Cloud project will help the government save the digital infrastructure budget related to cloud rental services from overseas parties by 4.1 billion baht. (equivalent to 76.2% of the invested budget), and will significantly enhance the security of Thailand’s information technology system as the cloud operators will be based in Thailand.

Ms. Traisulee added that the Government Cloud project will also be an important stepping stone for the transition from a traditional government to a digital government and will make full use of big data to manage and effective policy making.
