‘Children should be vaccinated after 3 months of recovery from Covid’

The injection time is three months after the illness, when the child’s body has recovered. and ensure vaccination safety”, Professor Lan said at Online conference on Covid-19 vaccination training for children from 5 to under 12 years oldthe afternoon of March 31.

The training was organized by the Ministry of Health immediately after approval expanded indications for injections Moderna vaccine for children 6-11 years old. It is expected that the vaccination plan for this group of children will be implemented in early April.

Associate Professor Duong Thi Hong, Head of the Office of Expanded Immunization and Deputy Director of the Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, said that there are more than 11.8 million children in this vaccination age group in the country. Children in the older age group, from 11 years old (ie grade 6) will be vaccinated first, then lower them gradually. Children will receive two doses of the same vaccine, not mixed. The two vaccines used, Pfizer (5-11 years old) and Moderna (6-11 years old), consist of a course of two injections 4 weeks apart. Pfizer vaccine has an injection dose of 0.2 ml containing 10 mcg of vaccine; Moderna vaccine has an injection dose of 0.25 ml, containing 50 mcg of vaccine.

According to Associate Professor Hong, the most commonly reported adverse reactions in children after the basic injection course included pain at the injection site, fatigue, headache, myalgia, chills, nausea/vomiting, armpit swelling/pain, fever, injection site erythema, injection site swelling, joint pain. The odds of experiencing this reaction are one in ten.

Symptoms such as diarrhea, rash, urticaria at the injection site, rash at the injection site, delayed reactions at the injection site are less common, the rate from 1/100 to less than 1/10. Myocarditis, pericardial reactions are very rare, the incidence is less than 1 in 10,000.

After vaccination, children need to be monitored at the injection site for 30 minutes and continue to monitor for 28 days after vaccination. Associate Professor Hong noted that parents and carers must be closely monitored 24 hours a day within the first three days, because children may experience adverse reactions at night. Parents also need to avoid letting children exercise vigorously, always be prepared to avoid possible serious accidents.
