“Solving difficult problems with understanding women, which is easier?”

On the afternoon of April 1, Prof. Ngo Bao Chau had a conversation with students of Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City about stories around Mathematics and life.

During the conversation, a male student named Binh raised his arm “very straight, very high” and asked the Professor 3 questions in a row.

“What influence does the professor’s wife have on her research career? If you work in France, what are the similarities and differences between Vietnamese women and French women? And a “serious” question: What do you think is easier to solve a difficult math problem with understanding a woman”, the male student asked.

Professor Ngo Bao Chau, after hearing the question, couldn’t help but laugh and praise “this is a very interesting question”.

Answering the “beam” of questions above, GS began to talk about his wife. “My wife is Nguyen Bao Thanh. I am very fortunate to have a wife who always takes care of and respects my work. This is not an easy thing.”

He shared that studying math sometimes makes him look like an autistic person in his family who doesn’t want to talk to anyone. Sometimes when I come home, my face is droopy, but I’m actually thinking about math, nothing more.

His wife may have to bear a rather large psychological burden when having a husband who is “heavy and light”. But his wife is very sympathetic to his husband’s business, so are his children. Although his wife is not a math student, nor does she understand what he is doing, she respects her husband’s work very much. It was a solid foundation for him to do scientific research.

Comparing solving a difficult math problem and understanding a woman, Professor Ngo Bao Chau said that both are difficult.

“Although both are difficult, there will be differences. Usually when we solve a math problem, we can understand it today and we can understand it tomorrow. As for women, today they understand, but tomorrow they may not understand”, GS Chau replied.

Before the clever and humorous answer, the whole hall below clapped loudly and couldn’t help but laugh.

“The older I get, the lazier I get, preferring to go to bed.”

During the talk, GS also received many interesting questions. A student boldly asked: “Are you a good person to balance everything in life, or do you have a lazy moment in the day? If so, how did you wake up from that laziness?”

Professor Ngo Bao Chau said that it is not clear if he is good at balancing things, but in fact there are many moments when he is unbalanced.

“The things I’m interested in are mainly mathematics, philosophy, literature… – things that I think perhaps make life more interesting. However, my thinking is that we are not short of time, We just lack focus.

Lazy job, everyone is lazy. But the older I get, the more I like going to bed, when I’m tired I just want to get into bed. On the other hand, the older I get, the more responsibilities I have to take on and try to fulfill my responsibilities. That is the motivation for me to get rid of laziness.”
