White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on April 1 that the US is preparing for the possibility that Russia could use chemical or biological weapons against Ukraineso Washington supplied Kiev with equipment and supplies that could be used to save lives after such an attack.
Ms. Psaki did not give details about the equipment that would be sent to Kiev.
The statement came weeks after Psaki suggested that Russia may be planning to deploy chemical or biological weapons against Ukraine. She initially made this comment in response to Russia’s publication of documents alleging that US-backed laboratories in Ukraine were developing biological weapons.
“Russia has made untrue statements and China seems to agree with that, we should be on the lookout for Russia’s possible use of chemical or biological weapons in Ukraine,” Psaki said.
US officials also denied allegations that President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, was involved in funding military research into dangerous pathogens at Ukrainian biological laboratories.
During a visit to Europe last week, President Biden said NATO would respond “proportionately” if Russia used chemical weapons in Ukraine. However, White House officials later denied that the US could use chemical weapons, saying it was against policy.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said on April 1 that Washington had not given any constructive response to the allegations. The United States has conducted the most biological weapons activities of any country but is the only country opposed to the establishment of a multilateral verification mechanism for compliance with the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC).
“The international community has good reason to question US biological military activities,” said Trieu Lap Kien.
