A Japanese couple get a divorce every 3 years, all because of…their name

Japanese law clearly stipulates that married couples must agree on a unique surname to use after marriage. However, one couple was unable to agree on which surname to use. The two are not the first couple in Japan to have this problem.

A young couple from Hachioji City, a suburb of Tokyo, face a dilemma when they decide to get married after a few months of dating. The girl made it clear that she intended to keep her maiden name, but did not receive the consent of her fiancé.

The girl said: “My husband (who was still a boyfriend at the time) thought women should take their husband’s last name. I didn’t agree with that, so we got into an argument.”

The couple, when sharing, wished to hide their identities.

The woman was very frustrated about not being able to keep her maiden name, while her fiancée took the story to complain to some friends. That’s when he discovered another couple had the same problem and sought to solve it by periodically divorcing and remarrying under the other spouse’s last name.

After the man presented the solution to his fiancée, they decided to solve the problem in the same way.

In 2016, they got married for the first time and used the husband’s last name for three years. Then, in 2019, they divorced and then remarried, using the wife’s maiden surname. This July, they are scheduled for another divorce, after which they plan to remarry using the husband’s last name.

While the compromise resolved their initial disagreement, the Japanese couple, who preferred to remain anonymous, both admitted that periodically changing last names ran into some problems. While registering for procedures and papers, the two people sometimes got confused in declaring their names.

While such an arrangement may seem complicated to many, the couple consider it the only solution that is acceptable to them.

The only alternative the couple knew was to go abroad and get married using their own surname, before returning home and asking a Japanese court to recognize their marital status with separate surnames. As for the couple, they think the current way seems simpler.
