Tesla hands over many cars in the first quarter of 2022

Tesla announced it delivered 310,048 vehicles in the first quarter of 2022, a record number amid a global supply chain crisis and Covid-19-related factory closures.

Most of Tesla’s first-quarter production and deliveries were Model 3/Y. Only 14,724 vehicles were delivered as Model S/X, according to the company’s announcement on April 2.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk wrote on Twitter: “It was a particularly difficult quarter due to supply chain disruptions and China’s Covid-19 zero policy.

According to ReutersTesla’s first-quarter deliveries beat the previous quarter and beat Wall Street estimates. Despite the automaker’s efforts to adjust to some of the disruptions that have gripped others, the total number of vehicles produced by Tesla in the first quarter was still down slightly from the fourth quarter of 2021.

While the supply chain has been delayed, Tesla’s manufacturing operations continue to be challenged by closures due to Covid-19.

Businesses across Shanghai are shutting down as the Chinese government implements a strategy of mass testing. Even Tesla’s Gigafactory located here, which was responsible for half of the company’s global output last year, has had to suspend production.

Meanwhile, hostilities in Ukraine have sent nickel prices soaring, affecting electric vehicle companies. However, experts say Tesla’s investment in the supply chain and nickel mines could allow it to avoid the worst of the bull run.
