MoMo Co-CEO Nguyen Manh Tuong tells a self-deprecating story of his childhood: I prepared for the GRE exam to go to the US for 3 months, my friends practiced for 1 month, they also accepted me when playing chess

Grandfather Nguyen Manh Tuong – Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors, Co-CEO of MoMo wallet – who is a private person, afraid to go to events or appear in public.

The reason why he stood in front of hundreds of students in the Talkshow “Startup Inspiration” at the Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City recently, Mr. Tuong saw this as a follow-up action (Pay It Forward) to repay the words of encouragement. , the sharing of those who have stood by to help MoMo continue in the time when it was still “starting and not up”.

We would like to quote Mr. Nguyen Manh Tuong’s sharing, which he called “some suggestions” for young people, but do not dare to consider it as a lesson, because according to him, MoMo still has a lot to learn.

When I was in school, I had a few close friends who I thought were pretty good. I did a math problem that took about 20 minutes, then the young men only needed to do it in 5-10 minutes. Time to prepare for the GRE exam to the US (GRE – Graduate Record Examinations – the test is required for students who plan to study graduate programs in the US – PV), it took me nearly 3 months but a few “comrades “My friend studied for 1 month and got a higher score than me. And many other things, like playing chess, my friend also accepted me 5-7 moves.

At that time, I was extremely worried about myself because “My intelligence like this, where does life go?“. There were also times when I was self-deprecating. However, now, the “comrades” who work at Meta (Facebook) – graduated with a doctorate in information technology in Chicago (USA), who are working in security company and I followed the path of starting a business like now.

After that, I realized that everyone will have different strengths and weaknesses and that success also comes from many different things. The concept of success defined by society is also not completely the same, such as success means getting high scores, success means getting into a good school, or success means having a Unicorn company…

To me those are not important, the important thing is that each person needs to understand his or her strengths. To understand your strengths, you must really study hard, work hard to understand what you are different from others.

Knowing yourself is the most important first step to starting a business!

7 years ago, when working in the payment field, MoMo had many competitors such as Grab, Shopee, VNG… MoMo compared to the competitors were all tiny because they were a global business with a lot of money and many people. , technology is very “delicious”. We have nothing.

At that time, I was also very worried, wondering about myself, wondering if I could fight? But actually, after worrying, we go back to work because worrying doesn’t solve anything, and it doesn’t help our lives. So we looked around and continued our work.

MoMo is small but has a very open spirit of cooperation. When we rolled to the US to ask for cooperation with Apple, Google, Facebook – it seemed an impossible task because at that time Apple, Google, Facebook were very big, Vietnam was just a very small country in their business map. so we had to convince them to do it with Vietnam first, then go to MoMo.

The journey seemed impossible, but now we are the partner of all those partners and the first partners in the world. We are the first e-wallet to work with Apple, the second e-wallet to work with Google (PayTM is the first e-wallet). All of this helped us understand that small companies still have their advantages, and that over the years we’ve come a long way and are far ahead of the giants we’ve named.

I think in life there are two, seemingly opposite, virtues Humbleness and CONFIDENCE. Confident comes from the special, the uniqueness of each company, you have to believe that you are special, you are unique. Both businesses and individuals must have certain competitive advantages.

At the same time, we are also aware that we don’t know a lot of things, know modest enough to learn and have a growth mindset, to have a mindset that this world changes too fast to use yesterday. At the company, we often say “What get you here, won’t get you there!” (roughly understood: What got you to today, will not get you to the future you want).

I used to worry a lot about what we make an e-wallet for, does Vietnam need an e-wallet (especially 7-8 years ago). And why should MoMo exist? This concern has dragged on for many months and we are glad we had enough time to answer this question thoroughly.

We think that a company or an individual who wants to be successful needs to create good products and create real value for society. But you won’t be able to create a great product, create value if you don’t understand why you want to do this and don’t like it, and don’t see it enough.

In the early days of MoMo, there were a lot of people who didn’t believe in the way MoMo went and a lot of people believed that we didn’t last a few years. And I think when I do something new, it’s natural for society to be suspicious. So in addition to answering the question “What do I want to do?“, then I should have the courage to follow my intuition and my heart. I have the right to be wrong!

I think a startup or a student should not follow other people’s standards, like a startup must become unicorn, or a graduate student must earn money to own a house and a car. I think it will come if you do a good job and create value for society.

To do all that will not be easy, because many times we are anxious. However, there is a character in the movie “3 idiots”, when you are nervous you will put your hand on your heart and say “everything will be fine”, and I believe in it. Therefore, I want to wish everyone to go out there, do what they like, and believe that everything will be fine!

Mr. Nguyen Manh Tuong – Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors, Co-CEO of MoMo Wallet – graduated from Hanoi University of Science and Technology, obtained a Master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Buffalo (New York), then graduated from the University of Buffalo (New York). MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Mr. Tuong has 20 years of experience in the technology and financial industries. He has joined MoMo since 2010.
