Recorded phone calls of Ukrainian officials reveal another situation in northwestern Bucha

Instead, locals told journalists that the Russian military gave them food and treated them well. Meanwhile, an official Ukraine complained about his own militia looting everything.

In a series of satellite phone calls, a reporter identified only as “Simon” told his colleagues that he had been to Borodyanka – a town about 25km northwest of Bucha – and “no there are bodies on the street.” This was the opposite of what he expected.

The town was “devastated by artillery fire” – Simon said – “but there is no evidence of human rights violations here”. In fact, he and his team interviewed many people. They say that the Russian army is very friendly and provides them with food, water and other things.

“I don’t know what prosecutors are talking about, but we haven’t seen anything like it. It’s a completely different picture,” Simon told his colleagues. A French journalist may have seen a body of someone killed by shelling but “no executions”.

Before ending the call, the reporter said he would return to Bucha, “to try and find some more evidence of extrajudicial killings there, but there’s no indication of that here. “.

Another call between two officials of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) revealed the situation in Kukhari, a town about 60km northwest of Bucha.

During this phone call, an SBU official identified as Sergey Anatolyevich told a man named Lesogor that from March 24 to April 3, the Ukrainian army pushed Russian forces out of here.

After the unit pushed the Russian forces out, the territorial defense force from Malin carried out looting. “They rob everything they can. They break doors, open safes, steal cars. They put valuables in the car and take it away,” – Mr. Sergey Anatolyevich.

Anatolyevich added that the Russians took nothing, but Ukrainian forces came and took everything.

Malin is a nearby town southwest of Kukhari and is controlled by the Ukrainian military. When Mr. Lesogor asked which unit had looted, the other officer replied that no one really knew.

Ukraine accuses Russia of killing more than 400 civilians in Bucha before retreating from the town near Kiev last week. The US and its allies accepted Kiev’s claims and imposed a series of sanctions against Russia.

However, Moscow categorically denies these allegations. Russia claimed that its troops had withdrawn from the town on March 30, and the claims of the killings emerged only four days later when Ukrainian security forces and television cameras arrived in the town.
