Many injured, some unactivated devices found, officials say

Many people were shot at New York City subway station during rush hour Tuesday, and a manhunt was underway for the suspect, officials said.

At least 13 people were injured in the melee that took place at a train station in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood, the FDNY said, though it’s unclear how many of those victims were shot.

A man, possibly dressed as an MTA, was spotted throwing a device at a subway station before opening fire at around 8:30 a.m., law enforcement sources told NBC New York. .

NYPD, though, said no “active explosive device” was immediately found at the scene. According to NBC New York, what is believed to be an explosive device “may just be debris”.

Sources say police are looking for a man, believed to be about 5 feet 5, 180 pounds and wearing a gas mask, who shot at least five people.

Sources said some of the injured passengers escaped by jumping on the train.

Several passengers posted images of blood and smoke in the Brooklyn subway station shortly after the attack.

Commuters were asked to stay away from 36th Street and 4th Avenue “due to an investigation” and “emergency vehicles and delays in the surrounding area”, NYPD said in a statement.

That corner is the location of a D, N, and R train station. There was no service there and at several stations in Manhattan shortly after the chaos.

Two schools were locked down and most shops in the vicinity had to be evacuated, NBC New York reported.

President Biden was informed of the shooting on the subway. Senior White House staffers are in contact with New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell to offer any assistance as needed.

Tuesday’s bloodshed occurred as New York City companies and employees Struggling with back-office arguments and whether workers should be forced back to headquarters, which they have barely seen in the past two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
