Mr. Duong Van Long, Van Giao commune, Tinh Bien district, An Giang province planted 4 hectares of OM18 rice, along with an investment of 80 million fertilizers and plant protection drugs. After 45 days of rice, he discovered that many areas were heavily infected with mosquitoes, and the rice had grown onion tubes instead of cotton.

“At first, it was only a few dust, thought it was light, but after a few days the whole field was infected. The more I saved the rice, the more I lost, so I quit,” said Mr. Long.

Nearby, Ms. Neng Duong’s one-hectare field was also attacked by an onion mosquito epidemic, when the last fertilizer was applied (3rd time). In the whole crop, Ms. Duong invested more than 30 million VND in seed, fertilizer, and land preparation…, but she only collected 3 tons of rice, a decrease of 60% compared to previous years. With the price of 5,400 VND per kg of fresh rice, she earned 15 million VND, a loss of 18 million VND.

According to Ms. Duong, there has never been a year when there were so many mosquito-borne epidemics as now. The field behind her house suffered the most damage in the commune. Hundreds of public lands were left empty because the owner made more losses.

According to statistics from the An Giang Plant Protection and Cultivation Sub-Department, in Tinh Bien district alone, the rice area affected by mosquitoes is nearly 1,000 hectares, accounting for nearly 6%, mainly with mild to moderate damage. jar.

Similarly, in Kien Giang, the winter-spring rice area was damaged by onion mosquitoes over 2,000 hectares, of which more than 530 hectares were severely infected. The fields that are heavily damaged by mosquitoes are often submerged under water, making it difficult for farmers to take care of them.

Dong Thap recorded more than 1,700 hectares of winter-spring rice area affected by mosquitoes, of which more than 40 hectares were infected, with an average of nearly 500 hectares, concentrated in Thanh Binh, Lap Vo, Lai Vung and Chau Thanh districts.

Onion mosquitoes, also known as worms, release toxins that cause the rice sheath to swell, and the inside to be hollow. When the onion mosquito invades the bud, the bud develops into a tube like an onion leaf, and the rice does not produce flowers. Symptoms of rice caused by mosquitoes are like drought rice, viral diseases (yellow dwarf disease, Tungro disease), stem borers…

Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Thieu, an officer of the Dong Thap Cultivation and Plant Protection Sub-Department, said that when detecting an infection with onion mosquitoes, farmers need to clear water from the fields, apply additional phosphorus and potassium fertilizers, stimulate tillering and drought. reduce yield loss at the end of the crop.
