According to the indictment, Coelho has been running RaidForums since January 1, 2015, at the age of 14. With the help of other administrators, Coelho designs and manages the platform’s infrastructure and software, and establishes and enforces rules for users on the forum. Coelho’s team also created zones that promote unauthorized data trading. Leaks Market – one of the most famous items on RaidForums – is introduced by the group as a place to buy, sell, exchange data and leak information.

To make money, RaidForums sells member credits, which can be used to access high-privilege areas or unlock data downloads. Conversely, members who contribute to the community, such as posting tutorials for illegal practices, will receive credits. In addition, accounts can also pay to increase their membership level, thereby accessing more advanced features on the forum.

The indictment also states that Coelho directly sold the data he stole, and operated an intermediary service for data purchases and sales. Coelho’s team will stand in the middle, verifying the quality of the seller’s data and the buyer’s payment method before the two parties transact. In the case of thousands of Vietnamese identity cards for sale On RaidForums, the hacker also suggested an intermediary option if the buyer did not trust him.

How was Coelho arrested?

According to Sky News, the activities of the administrative group take place in an anonymous manner, making it difficult for investigative agencies. This time, however, the FBI “obtained a copy of the RaidForums back-end database”.

This database discloses account registration information, IP addresses, login information and private messages between members and administrators of the forum. “Online anonymity does not protect the defendant from prosecution in this case,” the attorney said.

Along with Coelho, another 21-year-old man in the UK was also arrested by local police in March, suspected of being an administrator of RaidForums. Authorities confiscated 5,000 pounds, thousands of dollars and more than half a million dollars worth of cryptocurrency from this person.

The dangers of RaidForums

According to Bleeping Computer, RaidForums started out as a forum dedicated to organizing electronic harassment. Members submit fake reports to law enforcement, talking about an emergency that requires their assistance. Attacked targets can be found by security agencies and armed forces through these fake reports.

A few years later, RaidForums became famous for buying, selling and exchanging data. Ransomware and extortion gangs also often use RaidForums as a place to leak data, to force victims to pay ransom. Hacker groups like Babuk and Lapsus$ are the most famous examples of this behavior.

According to the US Department of Justice, before being shut down, RaidForums was used to sell hundreds of stolen databases, with more than 10 billion records from individuals around the world. These include personal data, bank accounts, credit card information, social security information.

After seven years of development, RaidForums has become one of the largest data trading forums in the world. This website is also the place where many hackers, data buyers and sellers look first on the Internet. “This is the shortest way for hackers to sell stolen databases or share with other members,” Bleeping Computer write.

Many security incidents like Bkav hackselling thousands of good citizen identity cards Facebook account information of Vietnamese people were also discovered from this forum.
