In a statement posted on its official website on April 16, the White House said: “The special summit will demonstrate the United States’ enduring commitment to ASEAN, recognizing the central role this organization plays. in delivering sustainable solutions to the region’s most pressing challenges, and to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the US-ASEAN relationship”.
According to the White House, the top priority of the Biden administration is to be a strong, reliable partner in Southeast Asia.
“Our shared aspirations for the region will further reinforce our shared commitment to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific that is secure, connected and resilient,” the statement read.
Previously, the conference had to be postponed twice. Most recently, the scheduled March 28 and 29 meetings were postponed due to the mismatched schedules of many leaders. The meeting was originally scheduled to take place earlier this year, but could not be held due to concerns about the COVID-19 epidemic.
The event was held as President Biden seeks to make establishing relations in the Pacific region a top foreign policy priority.
According to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the conference is expected to discuss the crisis in Myanmar and issues such as COVID-19 recovery, climate change, investment and infrastructure.
Previously, on February 11, the US published an Indo-Pacific strategy document, which contained many contents related to Vietnam and ASEAN.
The Indo-Pacific strategy document has five pillars, including Freedom and Openness; Connect; Prosperous; Security and Resilience and affirmed to strengthen ties with leading partners, including Vietnam, while consolidating a unified ASEAN.
