Nissan once again gave up its ‘child’ because of poor sales

Specifically, the Chennai plant in India is currently the only global facility of the Japanese brand that still assembles Datsun vehicles after the factories in Russia and Indonesia close in 2020.

The fact that Datsun had to leave for the second time continued due to poor sales results. Since Nissan restructured its leadership and operations in 2019 due to the departure of former CEO Carlos Ghosn, Datsun has fallen steadily since then.

As confirmed by Nissan, Datsun owners will continue to receive after-sales service support, parts replacement and warranty support by their own dealer network in India. Datsun’s website in this country is still active, presumably to settle the remaining number of cars.

SUV Datsun Cross (2018) is Nissan’s last attempt to revive Datsun but failed.

Datsun started out as Nissan’s export car brand outside of the Japanese market for nearly five decades from 1939 to 1986. When the Japanese marque decided to synchronize its name globally, the Datsun name fell into oblivion within the Japanese market. more than 3 decades before suddenly reappearing in 2012 with a completely different position as a low-cost car brand for developing markets.

The return of Datsun was then attributed to Renault as the French automaker had a very successful low-cost car brand in Europe, Dacia, but Datsun never came close to that height.

The first line of Datsun’s cars when back was called Go in the small urban car segment (2013), followed by 7-seat Go + in 2014 all using the Nissan Macra chassis. Although the prices of the two models above are quite competitive, their sales have never gone far because of the low quality of the interior, the equipment is too sketchy, and the safety is extremely poor (not many times with 0 stars).

Subsequent models of Datsun such as On-Do and Mi-Do (2014, using Lada Granta and Lada Kalina chassis), Redi-GO (2016, sharing Renault Kwid chassis) or Cross (2018, basically is the SUV version for Go+) have not achieved the desired success.

With the arrival of the Nissan Magnite in 2020, Nissan ran out of patience with its sub-brand when the vehicle was developed for Datsun in nature but ended up choosing to stick with the Nissan logo.
