A group of tourists traveling on a boat suddenly encountered a whale while sailing off the coast of La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico. This is a famous place attracting tourists to watch whales swimming in the natural environment.

Video circulating on social media shows the open-top whale-watching boat thrown into the air when it collided with the whale in the waters off Mexico. The impact caused the boat to bounce into the air, and six people on board were injured.

In particular, at least one passenger was thrown far away from the train, three others suffered minor injuries after the collision, and two passengers were hospitalized.

Civil defense spokesman Benjamin Garcia said the boat operators were unaware the whale was in the water nearby. The whale suddenly jumped up from the water, it pushed so hard that the boat flipped up, the passengers fell.

“Three people have been hospitalized, one of them is in a critical condition, two others are being treated at the port,” the spokesman said.

It is not yet known if the whale was injured in the collision. According to Mexican regulations, all boats wanting to observe whales must pay attention to safety factors, keep a good distance from the creatures. Many questioned what the boat in the collision was doing during that time, why it was traveling at such high speed in the vicinity of mammals.

From January to April every year, Baja is one of the best places in the world for whale watching. Around the area are nearly a dozen different species of whales such as humpback whales, blue whales, killer whales, Bryde whales and the iconic gray whales of the eastern Pacific.

Whales begin arriving in the waters around Baja in December, the following months becoming the best whale-watching season with many females moving there to give birth.

The warm waters have an abundant food supply, which is a suitable place for whales to give birth. Whale watching tours are a growing attraction in the area, so the risk of such collisions is increasing.
