VinFast has no intention of sharing electric car charging stations

Although charging stations for Vinfast electric vehicles have begun to be covered in many provinces and cities, the question of whether other brand electric vehicles can share charging posts with the Vietnamese automaker is still open.

Therefore, in the latest video posted with content instructing users how to charge VinFast’s electric vehicles, the company clarified this issue. Accordingly, the Vietnamese car company has outlined 9 things to note when charging cars at VinFast charging stations, including one notable information that “Only customers using VinFast cars are allowed to charge at VinFast’s charging stations”. Thus, it can be confirmed that the VinFast electric vehicle charging station only serves electric vehicles of this company.

On the other hand, some consumers are still trusting the policy of not sharing charging posts with other brands. Ms. LQ, currently living in Ho Chi Minh City, said: “Currently, Vinfast’s charging stations do not have enough capacity to serve, so they only prioritize providing utilities for their products. At some point, when the facilities have enough power, the company will automatically open it up for other companies to charge, because if they let other companies use it, they will collect fees and increase economic profits.”This move of Vinfast has caused mixed opinions on automobile forums. Mr. NS, residing in Hai Ba Trung, Hanoi said: “In theory, if Vinfast builds a free charging system for their products, charging the battery is an integral part of the goods, there should be no problem. However, if this is an attached service, the owner loses a fee when charging, then later needs to share the charging post for other brands’ cars, otherwise it will be a violation of competition law.

In fact, the domestic electric vehicle market will gradually become bustling in the future when other EV competitors are about to be imported. For example, THACO has announced a plan to bring the Kia EV6 electric car to Vietnam. In addition, some other electric cars such as Hyundai IONIQ 5 or Mercedes EQS can also enter the Vietnamese market. Not to mention other Chinese electric cars. Therefore, Vinfast’s products will be subject to competitive pressures from the famous competitors mentioned above.

Before the news that Vinfast refused to share charging posts with other brands, Mr. Manh Thang, director of Whatcar Vietnam magazine explained: “This is an understandable action because the charging posts that are being covered in our country are self-help developed by Vinfast, so they have the full discretion to decide whether to share this ecosystem with other brands. If other brands also want to develop EV market share in Vietnam, they need to develop their base Only then can the parties cooperate and develop together, but it is not possible for one person to take a lot of effort to build and then let other brothers in to benefit. The coverage of charging stations is to show that they will provide convenience to consumers, help increase vehicle sales, not focus on the energy business.”

Vinfast has the right to decide whether to share charging tower resources or not.

Looking back on the past, Supercharger stations have been opened by the world’s number one electric car company Tesla since 2012, so far the world has about 30,000 stations, but until October 2021, the US car company will start piloting it. Other electric vehicles are charged at several stations in France, the Netherlands and Norway. That is, after nearly 10 years of development, when the network of charging stations is strong enough, Tesla has just begun to share its resources with other companies. From there, we can see that Vinfast’s move is very normal.

In the near future, electric cars may not be popular in Vietnam because it takes a long effort to change the opinion of consumers who are using combustion engine cars to electric cars. However, Vinfast is still the pioneer in covering charging stations in Vietnam, giving domestic consumers the opportunity to experience and access clean energy vehicles. This is an encouraging policy and should be supported by the fledgling car company from the S-shaped strip of land.
