Why Mother’s Day?

What is Mother’s Day?

Mother’s Day Mother’s Day, also known as Mother’s Day (in English), is an opportunity for each child to express their love and gratitude to their mother’s birth and upbringing.

Although celebrated on many different days around the world, the most popular is only two days. It is on the second Sunday in May according to the American tradition of Mother’s Day. This is followed by the fourth Sunday of Lent according to the tradition of Mothering Sunday in the United Kingdom.

Thus, according to American tradition, in 2021, Mother’s Day will take place on Sunday, May 9.

Mother’s Day Origins

Mother’s Day has been around since the ancient Greeks and Romans, based on a traditional spring festival of gratitude. On this occasion, the Romans would hold sacrifices to the gods, especially Rhea – the mother of many gods in Greek mythology.

However, it was not until the early years of the 20th century that Mother’s Day was officially born. It is the result of the patience and relentless struggles of an American mother and daughter, Ann Maria Jarvis and her daughter Anna Maria Jarvis.

While still alive, Ann and the women of West Virginia founded “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs” to teach children how to properly care for their children. Later, when the country fell into civil war, her group changed its name to “Mother’s Day” with the desire to reconnect the family feelings that had been divided by the civil war. Not only stopping the size of a local group, Ms. Ann also wants to organize an annual anniversary day to express her gratitude and remember the memories of her mother. Unfortunately, however, in 1905, she died before her wish could be fulfilled.

Ann Maria Jarvis and her daughter Anna Maria Jarvis have constantly fought for Mother’s Day to be recognized

After her departure, her daughter Anna Maria Jarvis was always tormented because there were many things that could not be done for her mother. And so, Anna was determined to fight to ask the US Senate to celebrate Mother’s Day nationwide. On May 12, 1907, she held a memorial service at the church for her late mother in Grafton, West Virginia. And over the years, although it has not been officially recognized, people in the US states have begun to celebrate Mother’s Day.

Anna’s success only came true on May 8, 1914, when he, Woodrow Wilson, the current US President, signed a decision to designate the second Sunday of May every year as Mother’s Day. Since then, Mother’s Day has gradually spread and become popular in more than 65 countries around the world.

Currently, in Vietnam, besides Vu Lan’s filial piety, Mother’s Day in May every year becomes one of the important occasions to give loving words and meaningful gifts to your mother.
