New Zealand supports Vietnam with NZD 2 million to recover after the epidemic

New Zealand supports Vietnam with NZD 2 million (nearly VND 30 billion), of which half is for medical supplies, the rest is for disadvantaged communities to recover.

On the afternoon of May 11, Ms. Tredene Dobson, New Zealand Ambassador to Vietnam, and Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Minh Vu announced the above support package. One million NZD (New Zealand dollars) supported through the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF); The remaining NZD one million is supported through CARE International and Oxfam in Vietnam.

The part of cooperation with UNICEF in Vietnam will focus on providing medical equipment to implement vaccination and treatment for children. UNICEF Viet Nam Representative, Ms. Rana Flowers, said that social and health services have been severely disrupted around the world in recent times. This affects the health of children and women. Countries with an average health expenditure of less than $150 per person will not be fully prepared or well prepared for future pandemics. “New Zealand-funded medical equipment will help Vietnam’s health system prepare for future outbreaks,” said Ms. Rana Flowers.

Projects implemented by CARE International and Oxfam in Vietnam will support 5,400 people negatively affected by the pandemic. Most of the support packages are directed to women, disabled people, and ethnic minorities living in Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Quang Tri, and Ha Giang.

“CARE believes the support will help 3,100 disadvantaged people in ethnic minority communities in Quang Tri and Ha Giang recover quickly after the severe impacts of the pandemic,” said Ms. Le Kim Dung, Director of CARE International in Vietnam, expressed.

Ms. Vu Thi Quynh Hoa, Director of Oxfam in Vietnam, hopes to support job and financial training for 2,300 self-employed workers such as street vendors, small business households, lottery ticket sellers in Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong.

“This project will contribute to supporting the restoration of livelihoods for the most vulnerable communities in Vietnam, in big cities as well as in rural areas that are being hit hard by the pandemic,” said Ambassador Tredene. Dobson shared.
