In an answer to a question about energy policy on May 22 local time, Prime Minister Morawiecki said Poland plans to switch to renewable energy and nuclear energy, and stop using oil and gas from Russia.

“Should we pay Norway huge amounts of money for gas – four or five times more than we paid a year ago? It’s horrible,” the Polish prime minister said. “They should share in this excess profit. This is not normal. This is unfair.”

At the end of this year, Poland will complete a gas pipeline from Norway, in order to help the country get rid of gas dependence on Russia.

Since the end of April, Russia has stopped supplying gas to Poland after Warsaw refused to pay in rubles.

In fact, Poland also benefits from higher gas prices. PGNiG SA, Poland’s leading gas company, recorded pre-tax profits of $2.19 billion in the first quarter of 2022, almost double the same period a year earlier.

Profits increased mainly from gas units in Norway, which account for almost half, benefiting from the spike in oil and gas prices.

After Poland, Russia also stopped supplying gas to Finland on May 21 for the same reason: Helsinki refused to pay in rubles.

Russia still supplies gas to many European countries through Ukraine

Russia is still supplying gas to many European countries through Ukraine. According to Russian gas corporation Gazprom, the volume of gas supplied on May 22 was 44.7 million cubic meters, down from 45.9 million cubic meters a day earlier. Meanwhile, Germany is struggling to find new sources of supply.

On May 22, during a visit to three African countries, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Germany was interested in a gas exploration project in Senegal.

Mr. Scholz said Germany has started negotiations with the Senegalese authorities on the exploitation of gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Speaking at a press conference on May 22, Senegal’s President Macky Sall said he was ready to supply LNG to the European market. Mr. Sall forecasts Senegal’s LNG output to reach 2.5 million tonnes next year and 10 million tonnes by 2030.
