EU approves sixth package of sanctions against Russia

The European Union (EU) approved a sixth package of sanctions against Russia today (June 2), which includes a crude oil embargo.

“This is the decision of the ambassadors. The sixth package of sanctions will take effect after being published in the official EU journal, scheduled to be published on June 3,” RT news agency quoted an unnamed diplomat in Brussels, Belgium as saying.

A source close to the matter told Bloomberg news agency that the new package of sanctions is the EU’s toughest blow yet. Specifically, the sanctions package will ban the purchase of crude oil of Russian origin delivered to EU countries by sea for six months and refined petroleum products for eight months.

For Hungary and other landlocked countries, which depend on oil supplies from Russia through the Druzhba pipeline, oil sanctions will be temporarily waived.

According to RT, the Russian Foreign Ministry today warned of the “self-destructive” consequences of EU sanctions. “The above sanctions will mainly harm citizens of EU countries, while Russia will still be able to withstand the pressure of the bloc,” a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
