According to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ASEAN SOM conference will take place on June 7 in an online format under the chair of Cambodia, the country holding the ASEAN chair in 2022.

In the context of complicated regional and international geopolitical environment, all countries believe that ASEAN needs to maintain solidarity and unity. The 10-member bloc must also promote its central role in the regional security architecture and reinforce the principles and values ​​of ASEAN-led forums.

The ASEAN representatives affirmed that the 10-member bloc supports the settlement of international disputes by peaceful means on the basis of respect for the UN Charter and basic principles of international law.

ASEAN has repeatedly expressed concern about the hostilities in Ukraine and called on all sides to refrain from violence and de-escalate tensions. In two statements by ASEAN foreign ministers in late February and early March, the bloc affirmed its readiness to create favorable conditions for relevant parties to have peaceful dialogue.

The conflict in Ukraine has affected most countries, including ASEAN, in the context of economies just beginning to recover from the COVID-19 outbreaks.

On international and regional issues, the delegates emphasized that ASEAN should continue to promote its role in assisting Myanmar to find a possible solution to the current crisis through the implementation of the 5-point consensus reached by the leaders. ASEAN reached with Myanmar leaders in April 2021.

Regarding the East Sea, the countries reaffirmed ASEAN’s principled stance and agreed to conduct activities to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and the 40th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (DOC).
