Health Minister of Taiwan (China) warning, infection status COVID-19 will continue to increase.

Taiwan, with a population of 23 million, has reported a spike in new COVID-19 cases. Since the beginning of 2022 until now, this territory has recorded 51,504 cases of SARS-CoV-2 virus infection, after having well controlled the pandemic with strict border restrictions and strict quarantine measures.

With the majority of the population fully immunized, more than 99% of those infected in the current outbreak are either asymptomatic or seriously ill. In Taiwan, there have been only 7 deaths from COVID-19 since January 1, 2022.

Speaking at the daily press conference, Taiwan Health Minister Chen Shih-chung, who previously predicted 10,000 daily cases by the end of this April, said that Taiwan is still in the population stage. COVID-19 infections continue to increase.

People shouldn’t be worried because Taiwan is in a much better position than with a similar outbreak a year ago, said President of the Taiwan Medical Association and ruling party legislator Chiu Tai-yuan. Along with the high rate of vaccination against COVID-19 vaccine, the wearing of masks is also widely followed by people here.

Taiwanese authorities have moved to ease restrictions, including reducing the quarantine period from 10 days to 3 days for close contacts of infected people. Taiwan is considering reducing the mandatory quarantine period for all people entering Taiwan, currently 10 days, as the same territory is trying to live with the epidemic.

The current outbreak is concentrated in the northern region of Taiwan, especially the capital Taipei, but cases have been reported everywhere, including in remote islands.

Taiwan’s response to this outbreak is in stark contrast to mainland China, where the Shanghai mall has been locked down for the past four weeks to control a new wave of the epidemic. For now, life goes on almost as usual on this island.

Taiwan has reported 88,446 cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began more than two years ago, including 860 deaths.
